RNC is an acronym for many things, including Republican National Committee. So look who owns RNC04.com:

Organization:
Democratic National Committee
DNC Webmaster
430 S Capitol St SE
Washington, DC 20003
US
Phone: 202-863-8000
Email: [email protected]

Registrar Name....: Register.com
Registrar Whois...: whois.register.com
Registrar Homepage: http://www.register.com

Domain Name: rnc04.com

Perhaps the experts here can tell me if this is cybersquatting. Thanks for your opinions.

Pretty clear case of cybersquatting when you register a competator's mark. Did you find this one? Has the media caught wind of this yet? They'll have a field day.

Yes, I found that example. It's another reminder that laws are legislated for different classes of citizens, rather than all citizens.

What am I missing ..I see no cybersquatting, I see no trademarks, I see no websites..

If it was RNC.com well then yeah..nobody is typing in rnc04..big deal..

This is the type of thing if I was a Judge/Panelist..get that trivial nonsense out out here.

Although it would be interesting and amusing to see all the names the Dems and Republicans have registered..

I sold ProDemocrat.com and ProRepublican.com a couple years ago.. I see they are for sale at another speculartors site today..

So if IBM registered apple04.com, and just sat on it, Apple wouldn't win a UDRP?

The Republican and Democratic national committees should properly be in .org domains anyway, since they're noncommercial organizations. (The Libertarian Party gets this right; its site is at lp.org.)

.com is where it's at, so why shouldn't a non-profit organization have a .com domain?

You must be a Democrat? The Replublican National Committee uses RNC.ORG as their website address.

The "04" obviously refers to 2004.

Probably the stupidest name more than 10 characters I ever reg'd was "CourtAppointedPresident.com" the day after Bush was elected. (I'm an independent, but a spade is a spade.) I tried to interest Democrats.com in the name for a parody site, they politely turned me down. The name expired a quiet death.

The accurate domain to register would have been something like:

BushwontheFloridavotecountby400+votesrecountafterrecoutn-anddespiteChicagolandDaleyvoterigging-anddespiteDemocractictotalineptitude-flusteredbyasimpleballot.com

Why shouldn't a nonprofit have a .com domain? Because it screams "We're a bunch of morons who don't even know the correct TLD for noncommercial sites!", that's why.

I constantly feel like throwing a brick through my TV every time they advertise a noncommercial site with a .com domain... fortunately, I manage to restrain myself because TVs are expensive.

Although I agree you are correct that non-profits should be using .org, the problem is not really so much that we're a bunch of morons as much as most users have little or no understanding of the difference. Dot com is simply the most recognized and credible brand name, and it may be foolish to use the .org if you don't also own the .com. So, best to use .org and redierct the .com to it.

btw, Dan, I do like your site, but you should either lose the pink or add some flowers :)

Plus you can never find a brick when you need one. ;)

There is no such thing as a "correct TLD". There are just bad TLDs, not so great TLDs, good TLD's, and .com. Any organization who uses .org without bothering with the .com (if it is available to them) is not a very sophisticated organization and is just allowing someone else the opportunity to buy the .com domain to capitalize on their .org site.

Fact is people tend to type in .com when they type in a url.
