I had a domain in a registrar.
I let it expire but it didn't.
They took it off my account, renewed it and kept my whois details.
Can they do this?

May be that was not the registrar who renewed it.

It was the registrar that took it off my account.
It's not netsol.
Maybe it's one of their clients.

I've seen this before, too. Perhaps someone in the legal forum knows the answer. It would certainly be false information with potentially adverse consequences to you.

One possible reason to explain your case is that someone else renewed
it, thinking he or she can already get it since it expired. But that person
is probably unaware of the domain name life cycle (i.e. released from the
registrar, redemption period, etc.).

Have you contacted your registrar about this?

Hope this helps.

This is their reply:
====================
The domain codecforum.com had expired on 2004-6-11, and then the domain was dropped
into the redemption period, due to the domain hadn't been renewed within 40 days from
the expiration date.
And now we have paid the redemptiond fee and redeemed this domain back to our
account. If you would like to get this domain, you could request us to transfer this
domain to your account, but you should pay hte redemption fee to us,. the redemption
fee and one year renewal fee is $120+$6.69.
Please kindly let us know if you would like to transfer this domain.
==============================
Of cource they didn't took it off my account after 40 days, but after 30.
And didn't change my whois details, but only the nameserver.

You can all see the whois now and the registrar in question.

They said they will change it tomorrow.

How much do registrars pay to the registry to take a domain out of redemption?

Between $45 to $80 I think, although I can be wrong. Registrars can charge
registrants anywhere from $80 to about $200 for redemption.

What you posted is an extension of my earlier post, the only difference being
that someone else may have paid the redemption fee. One of the limitations
for domain redemptions is that they can only be redeemed back to the last
account it was registered in, so it can't be placed in another account or a
new one.

You didn't do that redemption, did you? If not, someone else did you a favor. :-D

I don't think you understand. I don't want the domain.
I want it deleted. I want them to remove my whois details.

Also noone paid the redemption fee cause it didn't reach redemption.
They renewed it and moved it in their account.

Also they tried to scam me out of $120.

Don't worry, I do understand. What I don't understand, though, is why they
redeemed the domain name when they're aware of the possibility that you
won't keep it anymore.

I was only kidding earlier about someone doing you a favor. Also, if what they
replied based on your post is correct, someone did pay to redeem it:

"The domain codecforum.com had expired on 2004-6-11, and then the domain was dropped
into the redemption period, due to the domain hadn't been renewed within 40 days from
the expiration date
."

That clearly said it. I even checked their Service Agreement/Terms Of Service
to see if they'll do something like that and can't find anything describing such
an action.

That's why I speculated someone else might have done that by mistake, only
they're not telling you. If they indeed did that in the hopes of getting you to
pay them higher to keep it, it's their loss. :-D

There is no way to pay for someone else's domain in onlinenic. It's not like netsol.

They lied in saying they paid the redeption fee, cause also they lied about removing the domain after 40 days, when it was 30.

Service Agreement/Terms Of Service does not apply in fraud. :)

Let me clear the air. When a domain expires it is auto renewed at the registry. It may appear to have renewed, and it did at the registry level, but once the redemption period expires the domain will be deleted at the registry level. My guess is that this registrar simply moves expired names into a separate account so that they are easier to manage. They don't change the whois info because if anyone redeems the name it will more than likely be the previous registrant that redeems it. I bet once the redemption period for the domain is over the domain will disappear.

The $120 dollars they wanted to charge you to redeem the name is not a scam. It is a markup of costs a registrar incurs when redeeming the name. Since the name should have been renewed prior to expiration this fee should never get paid by someone paying attention to their domain names. This is the only industry I know of where customers don't thing the products and services they purchase should be marked up. Registrars have to make money somewhere.

I know really well how domains drop.
The domain was not auto renewed. It was renewed.
I had about 10 domains that let to drop on the same date.
Only this one is still registered. All the others are well passed redemption and pending delete....
They never move domains to other accounts when domains expire.
At this time I have about 5 domains in my account that are expired.

So from the above you understand it was a scam. They simple thought the domain might have traffic. So they keep it for $6 and if I complain they ask $120.

Just a thought: can you log in your account and change the details?

If you can, you can later complain to ICANN about it and (hopefully) that
registrar will kill it.

One can only hope...

Once, per my request, had Stargate.com send a delete command to the Registry for one of my domains. It went through like a breeze and the domain became available for registration overnight. This was before the new cycle rules.
