When United Domains offered free .XXX pre-registering, I pre-registered a bunch of domains. Why not, it's free, and you get to play virtual domain shopping without having to front-up any cash, right?

But now I've got to decide whether it's actually worth paying out ($99 Application Fee + $79 Registration Fee) for any of these domains?

I went for short firstnames, as being potentially the most profitable of the 3 letter combinations to pre-register.

I managed to get girls names like:

Ann.xxx
Bev.xxx
Deb.xxx
Ema.xxx
Fay.xxx
Ivy.xxx
Liz.xxx
Meg.xxx
Mel.xxx
Sue.xxx

... and some guys names like:

Jim.xxx
Joe.xxx
Jon.xxx
Lee.xxx
Mat.xxx
Ray.xxx
Rod.xxx
Ron.xxx
Sam.xxx

Is it worth paying out $178 each (non-refundable) for any of these names, and am I even guarenteed of getting anything for my money?
What are your thoughts?... :?:

What does that $179 include (years registration?)? (I have no interest in .xxx domains so I havent' even looked at them yet).

If it's like any other new TLDs there will be a HUGE amount of registrations right off and most will not even renew. Any good names will go to auction (I'm willing to bet most of your's will, too). The only winner will be the registrar - and maybe a handful of people with deep pockets (like with sex.xxx) - but even then, the registrar will still win.

I agree 1000% with Dragger. It is just waste of money and time.. Only winners in any new TLDs are Registrar making money from registrations and the REGISTRY making money auctioning off all premium domains for huge $$$$. You and I and all DNF members (maybe a few exceptions) end up being the losers...

I'm not sure why you would go for first names rather than generic adult terms but personally think .xxx is a total rip off and a joke. they already sold off a lot of the really good domains to frank shilling apparently.

That is what I'm afraid of. I would pay the non-refundable Application Fees if I thought I was definately getting the names, but it's not clear. I think I am the only person to have these "pre-registered", (others had gone, and these were no longer available once I had taken them), but it's still not clear if I have "first refusal"?

Other people beat me to it. All the obvious ones were taken, I got "Lesbi.xxx", but all the generic adult terms were gone. So I started on 3 Chars combinations...

Let me rephrase my answer:

If you're thinking as a reseller, don't bother at all, even high end keywords that'll go to auction.

If you're thinking as an end user - meh. If it's relevant (cam.xxx, voyer.xxx, etc,) and you have a good development plan then it might be worth it - if you can get the domain at a low price. Even as an end user, though, I'd be hesitant, as mentioned above, the "good" ones will go to auction.

No. Not even the porn industry are going to use that extension. Hustler and the Larry Flynt brand have stated they are not going to switch anything.

You have someone else, some other entity that created an extension that the industry it is supposed to represent won't even use.

It is like creating an extension .domainers designed specifically for domainers to use...yet domainers did not want it, did not ask for it, will not use it, and don't even run the registry.

The same is true with .xxx. It is a business venture that thinks it can market a new domain extension when it is not even wanted, will not be used, and is not even being controlled by the industry it is supposed to represent. It is someone who had the money to buy an extension/registrar and beat out other contestants to the rights for that extension. It is purely an investment on someone's part that will generate a decent return on the release but will have no value in the long run. And that person/entity knows this to be the case. They know domainers will flock to the sunrise and release hoping to cash-in on sales of prime keywords to the porn industry. The only ones that will make money is those that control the extension.

I have a few adult domains already, I can now apply in September for .xxx names. This period is for people who own adult names in other extentions.

I'm not into adult but even then I would not waste my money in .xxx.
Remember, these names will do nothing to boost your biz.

I think you never read the ICM registry policies:

In the landrush all .xxx applications with more than one applicant will go to auction, regardless when you filed the application. And the loser(s) of the respective auction loses the application fee.

Save your money and don't reg any .XXX if your going to be paying that amount per domain
look into catching some nice dropping .coms instead.

WTF? This is too much, what you wrote 4 months ago is the same opinions that I, Katherine, Sarcle and others have been saying for the past week.. And now your taking the opposing view that .xxx has a future? that it's a good investment? LMAO.

Do you post just for the sake of posting or do you simply like to argue with yourself?

If I had the money to spare (university, etc.) I would be all over this as it is a genuine bonanza and virtually untouched with many great keyword domains.

Personally, I see the .xxx being a modality for teens and the curious to search for instant gratification of finding something suitable to their tastes.

The .xxx space could conceivably be successful in that regard. The extension identifies the product which is pretty damn strong and brand recognition.

The hypocrisy.

yep, with such a high price there is bound to be a lot of drops a year from now. if they were smarter they would of charged like 40 bucks max and made you reg for 2 years or something.

I think the pricing will be adjusted by renewal time.
It's not unusual for new TLDs to come out with a higher price tag, for example .tel domains were initially sold for $300 (for 3 years), later on they would give you two for the price of one.

The final step is when they give them for free, and you wouldn't take them.
