It is against the law to register a ".com domain" that only includes a country or city name?

Hi

No, it is not.

might be hard to find one available though, unless population is very small

i own a one word city name in .org, it gets some traffic and earns a few $ from ppc.

imo...

The case of France.com is almost unique. The same happened with NewZealand.com many years ago. A country's tourism office or government can play hardball. The French did not surrender!
