Anyone else agree? The way I see things is that something becomes valuable when demand far exceeds supply. When it comes to brandable domains, how many are really out there? When it comes to generics and you are looking to sell a particular product/service you have the choice of 1 or 2 domains, so owning one is like having waterfront real estate, only so many people can have them. I am not saying all brandable domains are crap, some are very catchy and memorable, but generally speaking would you spend mid $xxxx on a generic or brandable domain?

I was being serious ...

Basically if you hype it enough you can sell anything to the gullible.
Water in a bottle, oxygen bars, plot's on the moon, L-L-L's .. I mean ... c'mon ..

(Unless you an unlimited supply of money and no brains .. sure ... knock yourself out)

The chances are you won't be able to secure a generic domain if you sell say . yoga wear .. not unless you want to file for bankruptcy at the same time as you launch your site.

So you lower your expectations and try and secure something within your means, which probably leaves you with 3 word combos or ... splashing out some cash for a reasonable 2 worder.

Either way the amount of work needed to make a site successful increases exponentially the crappier your domain is.

Generic makes it easier .. brandable means a lot more legwork

I think it depends on how you define brandable. A mishmash of random words is brandable, but like you said, supply of those terms far exceeds demand, hence value is low. I hold a number of root words that don't get huge traffic, but which also don't have TM problems (e.g., patronate.com, morganatic.com, computater.com, equirria.com). I consider these brandable single word .coms which could be used by a startup looking for a unique domain name.

Yes, I would for the right name if I wanted it...great branding is everything when starting or adding to a business. Right now, Mid xxxx for a good 4 letter cvcv is about right...if not much more than that.

5-7 letter catchy/brandable names will do the same IMO...I think they are a good investment right now as you can get them for high xx low xxx in many cases and maybe even regfee.

I agree with your generic name assessment though and believe they are worth far more than the brandable names.

If asked to make a decision between paying $1,000 for a nice 5-6 letter "brandable" domain that I would have to drop $X,XXX,XXX into or pay $X,XXX,XXX for a real premium generic that I would drop $1,000 into....

No brainer.

I own a lot of brandable domains, and I've been successful at selling many in the mid xxxx range, but obviously sales of these names are not near that of generics, I look at brandable domains as long term investments, you really have to sit on them and wait for the right end user to come along, much like what Buydomains does with their brandables. As for pushing them on Forums or domain auctions, your not going to get nearly what you can for them vs waiting it out.

I agree with Onward and Raider's points. Brandable to me means a catchy easy to remember word or made up word, which is valuable to a start up. Mid x,xxx is a drop in the bucket to some start ups with millions in VC funding. But like Raider said, you could be waiting a while. There are a finite supply of quality .com names, and how many more websites to launch in the coming years?

I have let a few go that perhaps I should not have, but it's very hard to say. How long do you sit on a brandable .com? Reg fees are rising. How many are you going to subsidize, and for how long?

They tend to be picked up, but I know there's no type-in traffic there. And yes, there is going to be more demand for domains in the future, but there is a limitless number of extensions. How about .1, .2, .3....

And I also don't think that a generation from now people are going to be typing in .com like we are. .com could be worthless 20 years from now, who knows what's going to happen?

So how long do you keep a brandable .com? I guess my answer is I'm keeping a few root words that are the best way you can say a given thing. I'd drop or sell off the rest.

This is a gold rush. Remember that only a few miners ever really strike it rich. Most go broke. The real fortunes are made by the suppliers.

Everyone has their own opinion as to what is brandable and what is crap.

Look at the junk sold at auction on Sedo and TDNAM and the others.

But that's the point...you see junk where someone else see's a gem.

One man's trash is another man's cash.

Speaking of opinions, earlier mention of L-L-L...its like everything else. If you don't like it, don't go there. My parking and banking account love em! Don't like mobi, don't go there. Lactose intolerant? Don't order a Frosty at Wendy's check out.

Again, to each their own. If you want to sit on and believe that all the domains in anyone's portfolio are the best there can possibly be and there are no better and can be no better, then great. Sit on them and let them hatch. Or else try to find new opportunity. The .com market is so over-saturated with domains that no wonder there are thirty to fifty thousand dropping every day and equal sum being registered.

There are new markets out there and it is getting to the point the demand is outweighing the supply of good domains. People are looking for alternatives.

And when I see a member on this forum capture something like z-e-n.com or p-e-t.net, I'm thinking to myself, "DAMN!".

I can assure the CTR and Traffic and PPC will far exceed my expectations as they already have.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and some are beholding shit for names in every one of our eyes. Unless you are not into domains to make some money on the interim while waiting for a sale or waiting for a sale in the long run, then I don't see any harm in experimenting and sometimes those experiments can and do pay off handsomely.

I for one could care less about the new .asia but you won't see me jumping in a thread trashing that. Just because it is not my thing does not mean I need to let the world know it is not my thing.

It's brandable, it's worth a mint, what crap! is a worthwhile point. Sometimes I wish I could say it just the noobs but I can't say that based on what I have seen "experienced" and "seasoned" members self promote (or is it self indulgence?) on this forum pull.

And then you have others that fall prey to all the banners (not just on this forum) but all over the web for permium certification super duper guarantee! Most of us know it is bogus just like many of the threads here. But people buy into it because they want that feel good feeling that they did not **** up and don't want to look like a bonehead.

Want a premium, brandable, million dollar domain? Create one:

I just got an appraisal from SwiftAppraisal.com:

It could be worth a mint but I think you really have to know about trademarks before buying a single brandable dictionary word. You can rarely use a brandable dictionary word for any product/service that you want these days, and if the use of your site is limited because of other trademarks, then that's bound to affect the value/demand imo.

Perhaps it has to do with the web 2.0 trend... more interest for 'brandable' domains than in the past. But could be a fad.

You have me confused. Brandable and generic? Can you give an example?

Thanks everyone for their contributions, please keep them coming...

As I understand it, generic is when you use the words in the literal sense. eg Cameras.com for selling cameras, Cars.com for selling cars etc. I think its brandable when your not using the word for it's literal meaning. 'eg 'Orange.com' for selling phones or 'Apple.com' for selling computers.

I not sure if you can buy really good brandable .com names for mid $xxxx any more, so I would probably look for 2 word generic domains.
