Jar of preserved human fingertips wins award. Source: Ananova
A jar of preserved fingertips is the latest winner of the Pickled Skunk Brains award.
The award is presented by the North American Hazardous Materials Management Association to the oddest item handled by one of its members.
Officials from Monroe County in Indiana say they were stunned to receive the jar containing a woman's fingertips.
The woman had sued a lumber producer when her fingers had to be amputated after handling arsenic-treated lumber without gloves. The fingertips were passed on to the officials when the case ended.
"I've been here eight years, and it's the most bizarre thing I've ever come across," said Scott Morgan, director of the hazardous-materials division of the county's solid waste district.
The jar was later sent to a company that specializes in hazardous biological materials in Indianapolis, where it was incinerated.
Hazardous-materials agencies usually dispose of paint, household chemicals and used motor oil.
