owned the non-hyphenated version.

5-gum.com was on the commercial spot.

5gum.com is owned also.

All I ask is.... Why?

promote one...get traffic on both

maybe they're trying to brand with the hyphen, as it's probably better for seo recognition than 5gum

only they know why....if they do at all

could have been a marketing mistake or clerical error

who knows?

Somewhat off topic, but reminded me....

Its like those companies that use 12221Makemoneyathome.com.

The commercials boast about making so much money but they can't even afford a decent domain name. Fools.

Now that I think about it, maybe it's to track their tv ad campaign?

That could be the answer

many companies do this buy creating three and four word names just for promotional purposes.

didn't think of that

Being from UK, never heard of it
If it was in relatively small type on screen, i mean not the main text onscreen, maybe because 5gum, may look too much like Sgum?

The owner of Sgum must 've been getting some traffic ;)

there is a question i have been wanting to ask that relates to this topic somewhat. the generally accepted rule is no hyphens. but i always feel awkward about registering names where the second word begins with the same letter that the first word ends in. examples off the top of my head: cattail.com besttea.com or fulllife.com (especially the last one w/ triple letter)

so if you have such a name, is it ever more desirable to have cat-tail.com instead of cattail.com, or best-tea.com instead of besttea.com, or full-life.com instead of fulllife.com. also, does it make a difference for different extensions? would you be more willing to have a hyphen in a .info or .org name, than .com or .net?

everyone always notices the dash, so maybe it makes the words stand out more. when I see a domain with a dash I know I would enter it properly if I wanted to visit the site. I see lots of domains with dashes used in classifieds and the back of magazine ads for business type magazines. you see the ugliest domains in classifieds but it just shows that people will use them.

I also hate two word domains where the last letter of the first word is the same as the first letter of the second. I also don't like when the last letter of the first word is a 'tall' letter like t or l, but that's being picky.

I think people are catching on to the fact as well that 2 word domains are just easier to read (and cheaper to buy right now), especially longer domains, obviously not in this case, but something like losangelesattorney.com is just not as good when written on a car or billboard like LosAngeles-Attorney.com. I think we will see a big increase in price for hyphenated domains

I think it works really well when you have both, some people are stupid and don't type the dash!

surprisingly they also own nationalottery.co.uk and its is not even resolving .....they are not capitalising on the traffic on that name...weird isnt it .

Btw hyphenated domains do best in Germany....but I have also seen them do well in .coms and .net.

And as someone said, hypehanted domains are going to get more popular as they are easy to remember.

cheers

In the cases I've seen they are more like this 12221.Makemoneyathome.com . The 12221 is a tracking code so they can determine what commercials work and where. 12221 can also be representatives advertising in their local area.

Jusy in MHO...

I think its madness also to use crap like this for "tracking" purposes...better ways to track were visitors are coming from than two use "subdomains" or domains just for tracking like: 12mydomain dot com.

What you give up in branding and the ability to make it easy as posssible for people to remember your domain name...and to punch it in a browser correctly...far out weights this somewhat amateurish way of tracking traffic to a website.

Peace,
Dan
