Key Word Search Statistics

I want to research some key word statistics on Google AdWords, as recommended by experienced domain folks. The tool is free, but it appears you have to set up an account and enter data (including billing) as if you are creating an ad campaign for your business. Is this indeed what you have to do to get access to the key word search tool? Any other way to get these statistics?

You will be ok and wont be charged as long as you don't start running ad's Geode. From memory i think you have to add payment information just in case you want to run ad's.
