Register.com recently helped Peter King get back his prized domain, King.com. However, the hijacker is still on the loose. Richard Lau of LAU.com and specialist of recovering hijacked domains has recently been reported to be on this case.

What does everybody think about this? Do you think that the hijacker will be apprehended?

Just let the guy go, if he got his domain back then who really cares? Yes it would only make sense that the person that does something wrong gets punishment but domains get stolen all the time. It's the admins fault for not giving the domain a well put together password.

Well, if a key-logger was used, it really wouldn't matter what type of password you put together.

Do you think all victims are at fault for being the target of a crime?

That's not logical.

The domain LAU.COM is owned by Richard Lau, formerly of mydomain.com and namesdirect.com
As for smurf, I have to disagree that we should let him go unpunished, as it will just encourage this sort of thing

One can always hope.

One challenge is to locate the thief. The next one is to actually get him/her.

Get him , I went to Malaysia for a few meetings, I had my laptop there but i couldnt use the net acess so i went to the cafe the first time in my life. I logged on my godaddy account , only have 5 names there which are not worth much , all my other names are mostly with enom and moniker. And i think there was a keylogger in the cafe. When i was back after 3 days, I had 3 email notices that 3 of my names had been changed registry. I contacted godaddy services by phone but they couldnt do anything. Thank god that those names were not worth much or i would had been in a total loss.

BOTTOM LINE: Arrest all domain hijackers

Moral of the story : Never log into ANY account at public computers, including those at hotel business centres, definitely NOT and cybercafes. Bring your laptop and global wireless Internet roaming, or forget about doing anything on your computer.

its ridiculous that here we are in 2005 and most of the internet companies and websites of today still havent adopted a system that offers throw-away passwords, that can only be used once before expiring. it would be so easy to implement such a system. for example, maybe my long-term password is acbxyz12, but i set the account to accept a one-time disposable password of zxcv098.

thank you,draqon :)
You just give me a great idea.
And yes, the hijacker needs to be punished.
Imagine this:
Investigating this cases costs money and time- if you don't punish them, the hijackers will be spreading more and more....

Sorry Smurf,

But I Think that is the wrong attitude to have towards this industry, or any industry for that matter - or any person!

Are you assuming it's the "admins fault"?

Criminals are criminals and deserved to be punished - if not - then why make laws in the first place?

Why not just let people do whatever they want whenever they want to whomever they want however they want with anything they want?

Well, because society does not work that way in being able to call itself 'civilized' - it's what seperates us from 'the animals'.

...or are you advocating an Anarchist State?

Applied elsewhere - What happens if someone gets murdered? ...the killer flees - so should you just "let the guy go"? If they killed some1 you loved?

I think not.

While domaining isn't life or death - the law is the law - and criminals are called criminals for a reason - because they derserve to be punished for their illegal actions.

Why even have a policing system if we shouldn't prosecute criminals?
Not to say at times they even do much anyways, but thats another story.

I truly hope they capture this person and punish them to the full extend of the law - and beyond!

(FYI.. the Care Bears ALWAYS care! :p)

I've had to access my bank accounts and auction sights away from home a few times.. and each time I change the password on my way out, and then when I'm home again.. You can never be too safe.

A good idea for registrars and banking sites would be to have a temporary lock to all transactions untill a phone call can verify a new password.

Most of my logins have different passwords... and i change them regular.
I have to keep a list handy for the most part. some of my passwords are a 10-15 letter/number combo's.

I say bust the dickwad.. its because of ppl like that we have to keep good track of our stuff.
