I have noticed that some Registrars do not follow the above ICANN Lifecycle especially since Aftermarket domains have become very lucrative. Some of them are not dropping them anymore.

Exactly. Often, those domains fall into a domain abyss :D

Yes it's true, premium domains seldom drop anymore and the whole purpose of redemption is often circumvented. Because the TOS are written in such a way that registrars can take ownership of abandoned domains and do whatever they want with it, like auction them. Fortunately you still have some time to redeem them but not always that much.
