Has anyone noticed that in the last 3 months there have only been 3 reported sales of LLL.coms with all premium letters?

GBS.com $25,800 May 09 Sedo
NIB.com $11,100 Apr 09 Sedo Auction (SUPERBARGAIN!)
BSA.com $17,850 Apr 09 NameJet

These are the three latest recorded sales of LLL.coms with all premium letters.

So, if we go a year back there were lots of premium LLL.com sales each and every month, but now it's been only been 3 reported sales in 3 months!

My guess is that it's because premium LLL owners are aware of the LLL.com price dip, so they are holding their domains until the price is up again; - but is it really necessary? Based on the reported sales the last 2-3 months it looks to me like premium LLL.coms sell as high as ever. My own personal valuation of all premium letter LLL.coms is between $12k and $14k and it seems to me (according to the sales reports) that if you start an auction for a premium LLL.com, you will get just as much as you would 6 or 12 months ago.

So; are premium LLL.coms "recession proof" and still one of the best and safest investments you can make in domaining?

Let's discuss!

Correct; owners are holding. Over-availability creates a liquid market that drops the prices. Educated end-user buyers, however, will always purchase LLL .com's. In other words, holding onto too many domains of a specific niche hurts your ability to liquidate at decent prices. Don't put your eggs in one basket comes to mind :D

the more educated a domainer gets, the greater roi they can acheive.
these sellers may have bought low and figured it was nice profit.

whereas others who may have owned them would hold for much more
and one who had even less dn education probably sold them for $$$

what i've seen is, as more domainers get to own one or a few LLL.com's, then the thrill leaves for most.
they make the profit and move on, some keep a stash as trophy's, others keep them simply as investments.

it all depends on your personal goals and where you measure within them.

do you seek short term roi or long term

are you financially stable and sustaining

or dependant on each next sale?

as these things surely determine pricing and flexibility.

now you know i don't cater to the premium letter thought, but...

what happens after all the "premium" LLL.com domains are sold to end-users?

then will the non-premium LLL.com become premium again?

as there are only so many LLL combinations :)

this will determine prices for them in the future.

imo...

Good points Acro and Biggie! I believe that the fact that you can still get LLL.coms for less than $4k is the best money making opportunity _ever_ in domaining (at least since you could handreg 1-word generic .coms). I know a lot of people have "harvested" cheap LLL.coms and I'm sure they'll make a fortune in the years to come. I'm thinking 100%-200% ROIs on most LLL.coms purchased now for less than $4k.

There has for sure been a huge dip, but I believe there will be a time very soon that is more profitable than ever before for domainers.

Hi

even though LLL.com can be had now in $4K range, i would not advise buying unless you have disposable income.

for one who has limited budget, they could spread $4k around and pick-up some quality domains that could possibly exceed the profit margin of a LLL.com

imo...

Two on those lists really surprise me.

NIB is a common acronym for New In Box. These are huge key selling points for collectors of Toys and antique Auto Parts.

Toys (especially the Robot toys of the 50's and early 60's) bring staggering prices. When the original box is included, this can easily add an additional 50% or more to the toy.

This could be the definitive site for antique toy collectors. They would all immediately recognize the significance of NIB.

BSA is the acronym perhaps best known in the states for Boy Scouts of America. Perhaps their were concerns about TM's. Perhaps not seeing there are so meanings for this, including Body Surface Area which is used to accurately measure/calculate many medical procedures.

Boy Scout memoribilia is also a huge collectible. Their scarfs, badges, pins, patches, and even uniforms are highly prized and collected. While BSA may represent the Americas, Boy Scouting is an international organization.

I feel that these two are very low prices for the seller which means very good purchases for the buyer. But, that depends on what the buyer is planning to do with it.

I just looked and both are parked. Perhaps BSA can get a decent revenue from parked. But the parked pages SUCK! For Both!

As long as there are people who park quality domains like this, that leaves the door wide open to alternative extensions to dominate the market.

There are almost too many factors to consider with those sales.
IF BSA.com or GBS.com get decent traffic, then they were great deals.
I know NIB.com would have sold for more if my partner was awake.
We had that on our radar for at least 15K.

to answer the OP, I think LLL.coms are "recession proof", the smart buyers are always picking up LLL.coms, expendable income or not.
Generic domains with type in traffic and revenue will always be the best investments, but some LLL.coms do come close.

I can think of half a dozen publicly listed companies with the acronym BSA
