This is a recent article from wired.com. It's everyday news for domainers, but the closing paragraph got my attention...
"But ICANN director of communications Mary Hewitt said most lost domains are the result of inattention, not fraud. "Ninety percent of the time when people claim that (their domain has been stolen), they had missed the mail notifying them, or they failed to renew it," Hewitt said. "You should really mark your calendar." "

Next time that you are attacked as a leech, parasite, extortionist or cybersquatter, remember that you are not the person who let the domain name expire.
