Some time last year I let about 60 low value 3 letter .us names drop ( had been paying reg fees for about 8 years and got weary of paying) since they consisted of bad letter combinations, had no traffic, poor acronym use and search results.

It's been real interesting watching that same group of names getting (mostly individually) flipped over and over again between many domainers on this board.

It appears a lot of them have been flipped numerous times (perhaps 5 or 6 different times) in less than a year, all at very low prices apprx' $5 to $25 range and everything in between.

What's the purpose of it all? It certainly is not to make much money beyond spare change. Just a lot of time and effort for basically nothing :?:

Not sure if that is the reason. Buyers remorse seems unlikely for such low prices but I guess still possible.

Odd thing is almost all of them were picked up by drop catchers so even the lowest cost ones (i.e. Godaddy) still cost almost $20 but even with that initial cost I noticed a bunch were quickly flipped on the forums for about the same prices (maybe even less) that the drop pickup cost.

Probably people expect that the names they pick up will do better than in their former life, but they can change their mind fast.

Newbies want 3 letter domains in their portfolio, but can't afford the .com or .net price tag, so buy up cheap on crap extensions with crap letter combinations. Then they realise they aren't worth the renewal fees each year, and try to cut their losses and break even. I did it myself about 4 years back with about 200x 4 letter .infos. Then when I didn't sell any of them, and was faced with nearly 2 grands renewal fees, I let them all drop...

i've seen similar "recycling" with some lll.com domains

although owners aren't dropping them, they keep circulating among domainers
