Are made up words sellable? like combining two words, to make one for a product or business idea?

What, you mean like You and Tube, or Face and Book, or My and Space?

Compound words words like spork, brunch, or like my disposal "insinkerator". If I hadn't been asked I could have given thousands. But this is all i can think of right now.

Acroplex :D

But I suppose you're referring to words that eventually become known as a trend, a service or a process. E.g. Education + Entertainment = Edutainment

Because the beauty of these compounds is in the eye of their beholding creator, it's hard to tell if they are sellable.

Acroplex: A friend of mine and I came up with "Edutraumatization" during highschool after a teacher's pants split in class and we found out that they go "commando"

Watch out for TMs, but the test is not whether they appear in the dictionary you used at school, but whether they are in common usage and people use these as search terms or type them in with dot com on the end. Mind you, you would be surprised what find its way into the Oxford dictionary.

It is worth making up terms yourself in the hope that they will become popular? No, not unless you have a cult following that is going to adopt and popularise it for you, or you have a crystal ball with a lifetime warranty.

If you are promoting rubbish, in my book that is fraudulent.

It certainly won't provide for a long-term business success.

Hey, what do I know, MacDonalds and Coca Cola get away with it.

Several years ago I purchased modage.com for my wife's business. She hasn't used it so it remains parked. Last week, I received three offers. I asked the third offerer why she was interested. She said modern vintage is a very hot trend right now and modage is a nice combo. Who would have ever thought? Of course now I want to sell it but at a much higher price than what was offered.

i've got one or two of those floating around. eg. Meximan = Mexican + Man. I'm still waiting for some company to launch this new product, magazine or cologne with this name :)
