Is there a big difference between domains like "femmes.com" and "lesfemmes.com"?

I don't know much about French domains, but I think the difference is a lot slighter than in the case of similar English domains ("women.com" vs. "thewomen.com"). I know there are a lot of French papers with the "L" in front: l'humanite, l'express, le figaro etc.

Am I correct?

As a rule, avoid the leading article at the start of the domain. It makes the domain 'distinctive', for that reason it's usually used for newspapers ie Le Monde, le Figaro etc.
As in English, domains with a leading article are not very good otherwise, and there is no scarcity for these either.
