Selling a registered trademark - sounds like they haggled over the price - obviously cybersquatters.

They should have taken it corrupt WIPO UDRP - they could have got it for a couple of grand ;-)

Mercury is a generic word. I don't think they would have won at wipo. Many companies use Mercury in its name. Another big company that comes to mind is Mercury Marine.

SO - WIPO do not take words and initials (that can LAWFULLY be used by MANY others) away from their legal owner?

I suggest you read WIPO decisions.

I know it happens. I just don't think they would win with this domain.

I suggest you read nhn.com thread in Legal forum:

As is quite usual - the defendant tried to prevent NHN Corporation overreaching mark by changing use of the domain.

The defendant was doing nothing illegal with the domain.

Even Dan said, "Would I have ruled against them if I were a panelist? Probably not, as the intials have inherent legitimate uses up the wazoo."

This is the *absolute crux* of the matter.

The Complainant KNEW that "the intials have inherent legitimate uses up the wazoo".

They even offered $50,000 for the Domain Name.

That did not work - so they then tried corrupt UN WIPO's UDRP - and succeeded.

Some intelligent people on the forum have trouble in understanding what the *absolute crux* is ;-)
