I purchased the domain name few days ago it was expired now this i've done some emails to sell of course:

email 1 i received:

I would be interested in knowing how you obtained "MY" casino name. I
started the site at considerable expense to offer a full service casino to
the public. Please contact me ASAP. I can be reached in my office at
(000)555ZORRO. Thank you.

email 2: it's getting warmer

If it is not too much trouble I would be interested to know the company that
you purchased the domain name from. I have been in touch with the gaming
company that I started the casino with and they have assured me that the
domain fees have been paid. Thank you for your speedy reply.

email 3: few hours ago

Thank you for your time. This is something that I will obviously have to
take up with the gaming control board out of Nevada. They are the ones that
oversee problems such as this. I purchased the name when I opened the casino
over two years ago. I did this through a casino brokerage firm called
Xirtrix Gaming. The just faxed me over a copy of the domain fees that have
been paid regarding this particular name. The fees have been paid through
2005. I will try to find out more information concerning this matter and
will be in touch with you when I do. Thank you again for your time. You
have been very helpful. I hope I have not caused you any undo stress or
inconvenience. If you have any questions for me, please don't hesitate to
contact me.

new email:

Thank you, I will try this route first. If I see the need later I will
surely be in touch with you. My only hope is that you did not waste your
money with a company that has pirated the name. This would put you in legal
jeopardy. I am looking at a fax now that assures me that I still own the
name. One of us has obviously been taken. I will check further, if I need
to contact you will I be able to find you at this Email address? If not,
please send me an address or phone number where I will be able to get in
touch with you. Thanks again for all of your time and patience with this
matter. Have a nice weekend. I should have some more information by Monday
afternoon. I will forward it to you if you would like.

Sure it had dropped when you registered it

But it is the name of their casino and they had it before

Which Register did they use ? Verisign have been known not to renew peoples domains

Verisign just offer the price of a registration back

So unless you are willing to give it back

They will have to go through :

http://arbiter.wipo.int/domains/

and if you try and sell it to them - they can say you registered it in bad faith

nice to see your still around jeroenp, been a while since i seen a post from you.

As a good will gesture, have you re-directed the site to his web pages? It would cover your ass slightly (can't sue u for lost income, and would be seen as a good gesture from you and that you didn't just buy the name to cybersquat).

What satisfaction would you gain by hurting someones business not to mention the possibility of throwing people out of work?
Be a sport and give the name back!

I agree...give it back without hesitation.

From these correspondences it appears the guy was very civil with you. That in itself is a rarity, normally they are threatening lawsuit from word one.

No way you will be able to profit from the name, write off the reg free and chalk it up to experience.

How long was the name placed on hold for?
I am perplexed the original owner did not notice when his site was off the air and had to find out from the new owner.

What registrar would just dfelete a domain of (such a high profile?) client without previous notices??

Was the domain captured via a snap, fish etc name grabbing type service?

If you give it back, stating you are giving it back as its obviously a mistake, he has been very civil, and you don't want to hurt his business, and that you are willing to foot the loss. He might even throw you some free money via his casino ;)
