Microsoft buys BreakingNews.com Domain name

REDMOND, Wash. - The digital network that includes msnbc.com on Tuesday announced the acquisition of the BreakingNews.com Web address, with the aim of creating a Web site to complement its @BreakingNews alert service on Twitter.

That must have cost a pretty penny. Wonder if they inquired about it from a gmail account and posed as a broke college student getting it for some project.

Yea...these days that's one of the most killer news domains to have. My brother was putting together an ajax-powered news aggregator and was referring to it as his "breaking news site" and in general that term is used all the time to catch people's eyes. Definitely worth whatever they forked out for it especially given they already had the Twitter name.

I think that this acquisition has put Microsoft in the news portal game again. Maybe we will see some other acquisition in the near future.
