Mobi Future?

I'm not making any predictions about mobi's future but read this article and decide for yourself.....especially the part talking about " a miniature projector would beam a crystal-clear virtual monitor on to any flat surface or send images via Bluetooth to a screen in your glasses. Another would cast a virtual keyboard on your desktop". The question I have is when this happens (not if but when) why would mobi be needed?

About 8-10 years ago, I read about plasma microprocessor that required not power source that was the size of a human hair and created and supplied its own source of power and was a microprocessor so fast it was immesurable to calculate. This was in a WIRED magazine I think, could have been SCIENCE DIGEST. This was not fantasy as it had already been developed. It was to revolutionize the computer industry.

The glasses thing mentioned in the article, also old news. This has supposedly been developed and tested in the military for perhaps the past 5-7 years. One thing discovered was that even though it had it purpose, it was almost information overload for the user. Too much to look at, too much visual stimulation, too much to take in and comprehend. It was almost like taking all the gauges out of the cockpit and putting them on eyewear.

The internet and computers are destined to change and I hope theY do.

Imagine a personal computer the size of your mobile phone, capable of doing everything your current laptop does, as well as making calls, taking photos and playing your music and videos.
Sounds like still a .mobi size format to me for viewing. And I think .mobi is essentially just that...a formattable size to accomodate a small viewing area.

Carmi Levy says the technological roadmap will eventually lead to flexible, thin film batteries that use a variety of compounds to create much better energy density. But it will take at least five years for these products to become available, and will require fundamental redesign of our mobiles and laptops. "Every piece of circuitry must be fully re-engineered," he says. "It is a [huge] feat to switch over to this."
I guess we can read anything into anything, but this article seems to be more focused on the battery issue more than anything.

And once that is downsized, then everything should follow suit in downsizing along with it. Again, what's the point of reference regarding .mobi if everything thus becomes more "mobile"?

Device manufacturers are also taking action, moving away from a fixation with creating faster and more powerful gadgets to making sure they can last longer on a single charge. But battery advocates doubt that they will keep up with the ever-growing demands for mobile power
Mobile power...laptops, PDA, cell phone. This article deals primarily on how to meet the demands of these portable devices without sacrificing power but at the same time doing something about the hazards of batteries.

This article in my opinion is about the demise and downsizing of .batt(ery) rather than the demise and downsizing of .mobi(le).

Yes, I agree, but my point was in regards to the potential new technology that would allow the screen itself to be projected onto a much larger surface than the small cellphone size screen. If that were to happen would the mobi tld still be necessary or would the dotcom continue as the major choice as it is now?

Why are you even associating the 2?

yeah well said
tbh it's yet another pointless mobi thread. yawn
important to remember, i am a fan of .mobi, but it is only an extension.
if & when they find a way of bypassing extensions, i guess we're all out of a job

Because as I understand it the mobi url was created for websites on a small screen, so if the small screen is now changed to a larger screen by projection onto a larger area is the mobi still necessary?

Look, I don't know much about this and I'm not saying mobi is doomed. I am merely asking a question.

I don't think it's an issue because you don't always have a handy, white, flat surface to project too (beaches, riding in a vehicle, in a bar, at a sports game, in the forest, etc.). And not everyone will want to deal with carrying glasses around, it's just one more thing. People are used to looking at the screen on their phone now anyway. If anything, I could see the projector feature being added to mobile phones as they are now, so it would be just one more option. I think the small screens are here to stay for a while, just my opinion.

Projecting images onto a surface...fine.

Small batteries to replace large ones, less weight, less hazards, less hazardess waste...great.

People giving up 3.5 billion and counting mobile phones and counting? Doubtful.
