For those of you that have expensive, premium domains, I'd like to know which registrar keep your domains at.

I've heard Godaddy horror stories about them giving away domain names when their is any kind of legal dispute, without even contacting the owner prior to taking action.

And I've got a $xx,xxx name at Netsol, but they have expensive renewal rates, and now they are being sued for some other stuff also.

Which registrar do you recommend?

Dnf members get special rates at moniker, just call them and tell them you want the VIP deal and need to transfer a bunch of names over...you'll probably get your own rep to assist you and such...they are busy, but they are good.

I would have to say it again again and again Moniker but the laws currently being passed against the Domain Industry i think i will have to go with some non-US registrar like estdomains.com

good point draggar :)

so better hotmail or gmail ;) ? (you probably meant the password)

This opens up a good debate. What is the most secure email?

Sure, it's all about the password, so make it complicated.

Good tricks?

  • DO NOT USE EASY TO GUESS PASSWORDS. Working in IT and having access to passwords I'm suprised at how simple some of them are. Avoid using:
    • Pet names
    • Nicknames
    • Family member's names
    • Streets, Schools, where you lived etc.
    • Hobbies
    • PASSWORD
  • Capital letters and numbers improve on the security of password.
  • Capital letters in the wrong place help, drAggar for example.
  • So far, the best trick against brute force attempts and hackers is to use non-standard non-alphanumeric characters, even something as simple as an underscore _ can help, international characters are good too (learn ASCII mapping for you people who don't have international keys, like ALT-0191 (on the keypad, not the numbers above the letters) for ¿ . I've known people test password hackers and this is the best tool against them.
Bad passwords:
draggar
draggar2008
draggar1
domains2000

Good passwords:
draGgar09
20doMAinS00

Best passwords:
¿draggar?
domaiñs_2000
dråggãr

Also, change your passwords often and check auto-forwarding rules and activity logs (if you have access to them). Keep a very close eye on your sent items and deleted items, ameture hackers like to try to hide their tracks but forget these folders.

Clear your cache and temp fils often, too, even immediately after you visit the site if you're really paranoid.

Avoid unsecure networks.

I have domains at Moniker, but also consider Fabulous.com. They have an executive lock for your high value domains. Here is the definition of E-Lock:

Executive Lock
DEFINITION:
Executive-lock (E-Lock) allows for the domain name to be frozen. This means that the domain name is:

1. Unable to be transferred out to another Registrar.
2. Unable to be pushed to another Fabulous account.
3. Unable to have changes to its nameservers.
4. Unable to have the registrar-lock status removed.

It goes on to say how to remove the executive lock and the steps that are taken to do so. It can take a few days to a week to remove the lock depending on the steps that YOU set for the domain.

If I had a high value domain, this is the route I would go.

Hope this helps :)

Moniker is a fine registrar but security should be one of your concerns. Most registrars are secure with locking and auth codes so think about pricing, user interface, ease of registration, transfers etc.

Go buy one domain from five different registrars and then go in and manage the domain. Also, ask customer service a question and see how and when they reply.

Spend $50, do your OWN first hand homework then make a decision. You don't want to transfer your domains or start buying them at a registrar you don't like for whatever reason.

Also, look into getting a reseller account if you do any volume. Enom and godaddy (wild west) have resellers. You get discounted pricing or a commission on your own purchases.
