Hello everyone, I just wanted to share my opinion and my thoughts on the hot extension, the China .CN. Well first, I'll say that I am Canadian born, and both my parents are Chinese. Growing up, I have seen the method and behaviour that Chinese adults (in Canada) use to learn and pronounce English words. I noticed this: for some reason, the singular and the present is dominant over the plural and past, even when incorrect. Why? I believe that new English learners prefer to use them because they're easier. Saying phrases like "I buy food at store" is much easier than "I bought food at the store". Makes sense. So to me, logic would say that Car.cn makes a better name than Cars.cn (to the people in China). And YES, most chinese people do know simple words like Car. The english language is growing stronger in China because of China's western business ties, which is another part I want to talk about.

I read some posts and comments that all .CN names are only worth reg fee. I can't say I agree on this too much. Here's why: China is the worlds most populous country with over 1 billion citizens. China's amount of internet users place 2nd in the world, only after the U.S., but is expected to sky rocket past the number of American internet users by 2004. And to add to that, China's economy is seriously booming (thanks to North American investors!). It grew an astonishing 8% in the first 9 months of 2002. Eight percent. A booming economy means more jobs, more internet users to reach out to.
Info available here...

Anyways, feel free to comment, talk about, argue. Insight is what feeds the mind :) Thanks

Thanks for that insight.

So in your opinion my 4 .cn's that i got so far should meet the "requirements"?:

Ginseng.cn
Bondage.cn
Hentai.cn
Anime.cn

I'm aware that Henati and Anime is japanese and Bondage obviously english :) ; but how would Ginseng be spelled in chinese using roman letters?

Insomnia, could you please comment on the perception of Chinese-Canadians on .cn versus .com.cn versus .ca versus .com. I can try and be more specific using an example.... Are Chinese-Canadians (and assumingly Chinese Americans) more likely to type:

News.cn
News.com.cn
News.ca (then narrow their search) or
News.com (then narrow their search)

when they are looking for China-related news?

I am using this ONLy as an example. I know for example that Americans looking for (i.e) JObs type Jobs.com and not Jobs.us (not yet at least) even though they are looking for jobs in the US.

Thanks in advance for your insight!

I just made an almost exact comment on another thread using car.cn vs. cars.cn! Talking about co-incidence.

You've forgotten one thing: they surf in CHINESE!

Just some thoughts from yet another Chinese Canadian. :)

Pretty good names, although I think some chinese will have trouble spelling them. Good for an english market though.

TrafficMonster:
News.cn
News.com.cn
News.ca (then narrow their search) or
News.com (then narrow their search)

News.cn - Unknown as of now. We have yet to see the .CN in use!
News.com.cn - Nope
News.ca - Perhaps some may, although the .CA extension isn't exactly crazy popular in Canada
News.com - the most likely type-in anyone would use

I hope that was useful. Thanks

I read some posts here yesterday about numbers, and I quickly registered some cn domains with only numbers. (good numbers,
with 2, and 8). Why I can get them so easily after 24 hrs if they were so good??

I find it interesting that neither ICANN, CocaCola, or Verisign were able register their own names in the Dot CN ccTLD.

note: At what point does it sink in that we've had these "it's going to be huge" debates before?

One other thought. There is a lot of dilution in the .cn market with .com.cn/.net.cn/.org.cn. At least with the US ccTLD you don't have that type of situation.

I believe some people tend to over emphasized the factor of language barrier in appraising .cn names, the concerned parties here are the Chinese Internet generations and cyber businessmen, not just anyone in China. To know a few thousands of English words is not that hard for any educated people above 18 in China today, and their different usage of English, Pin-Yin (JILI, RUYI, both mean "good luck" or "lucky") Pin-Yin mix (LongFa.com, which means "rich for long") and many alien-style mix (MoneyCome.com, SayStory.com...), just INCREASE, not limit the application of English domain names for the Chinese. And that's why I have grabbed something like TOEFLChina.cm, RUYI.cn JILI.cn... :D

Take a look at these two Chinese Domain sites, and check the Chinese version of cybersquattering:
Name Exchange (50,000 domains / Simplified Chinese)
http://www.domainpricing.com/index.php
EachNic (35,000 domains / Simplified Chinese)
http://www.eachnic.com/

Izopod: Well, what if it is huge? My post was really just my opinion and advice on the name. Hopefully we all don't go out and blow our monies on cn domains. In fact, I've only regged one name so far!

You'll be kicking yourself in the a** for only buying just one dot .cn name!

I think what some people have been saying is that you can't possibly start putting a price tag on names that just came out yesterday. To start putting big price tags on dot .cn names right now would be reminiscent of the old Afternic days.

izopodian philosphy: Always take a risk when money is on the line but don't ever get sold on it line, hook and sinker.

Fair nuff, the .CN hasn't been out long enough to figure out what its truly worth. Perhaps in approx. 6 months we'll see some established .CN sites!
