As reported by "AP" via Chicago Sun-Tmes

"Del mar Community College in Corpus Cristi Texas has blocked the site in response to complaints about sluggish Internet speed on campus computers.

An investigation found that heavy traffic at the MYSpcae.com was eating up too much bandwidth, said August Alfonso, the school's chief of information and technology. Forty percent of the daily internet traffic at the college involved the site, he said."

Good riddens, I'm getting tired about hearing about this site in some negative fashion or the other in the news past few months. Social Networking sites suck! nontheless, I'm am currently working on developing one :) But seriously, I think this is a due move for a private institution, but I think in general the media has been given too much attention to the site. With a community of this size it is bound to have some bad apples, but I do not think that ratio wise it needs be painted as a raw and unregulated community.

This might raise interesting legal questions. Can you ban something purely for being too popular? Could you kick a store out of a community because it has too many customer causing traffic? I know you can sometimes stop them from coming in, but once they are already there?

if you own a network, you can do anything you want on it. (not thatI agree with it though)

I dont know how myspace stays popular really.. it's always got tons of severe lag like it's hosted on some cheap, home built server or something.

The campus network is for learning not for chatting. Why provide something free when it has nothing to do with school?

No, a community college banned it in Texas.

If it is banned only on campus-provided computer lab PCs that would seem like a move they can rightfully make. To ban it across the entire campus (including all dorm rooms and personal PCs) is most certainly wrong and I'd be willing to bet that MySpace could pursue legal action against them for it. You can't ban personal PCs from accessing a legitimate website because people find it popular and enjoy using it.

their not banning the pc's from accessing it, they are banning their servers from access. Something completely, totally legal.

no different than them blocking fileshare programs as done in the early 2000's
Porn blocked most likely as well.

AOL blocks many sites from their servers, as does earthlink... et al.

their servers, their rules.

Filesharing and porn sites can be blocked because of illegal activity. What is wrong with myspace other than the fact that people love it and its popular. Yes they reserve the power to block it, but it's not a wise move. It will cause a lot of controversy and potential lawsuits. Nothing is wrong with the site.

Well, I don't know about you but I've seen porn on more than 1 myspace profile.

Since when is Porn Illegal?

Also, filesharing isn't illegal. Downloading copywritten material is. It's the bandwidth, not the act/site.

If the students are not paying for the internet access, they can do whatever they want. Yes, they block the servers from accessing it. Just like some ISP's have blocked their systems from allowing access to certain websites.

When it is freely accessible to those under legal viewable age.

It could be argued that students are paying for the access with tuition and tax dollars. It's a public university apparently. Hard to imagine it's legal without justification beyond being too popular. A private university, sure. Public universities have freedom of speech issues to consider as well.

Well, I don't know about you but I've seen porn on more than 1 myspace profile.

Links please!

nah, just kidding.
