Pardon my ignorance, but I would like to know roughly how long it takes to register a private nameserver (assuming, of course, that I own the domain)?

For instance, if I own example.com, how long would it take me to register ns1.example.com as a private nameserver and have that name propagate throughout the Internet?

Do most domain registrars offer this service (i.e. private name server registration) without any extra charge?

Finally is it possible to have a common nameserver across multiple domains, domiciled at (i.e hosted by) a number of different hosts?

well..some registrar charge and some not.you need to check at concern registrar site how they included this service. And if you have the service to manage dns, you can create it instantly from your domain control panel and it will be needed few minutes to max 48 hrs to get resolved.

:)

Ideally same as domain, at least 5 minutes up to 24 hours on the average. It
may take even longer, depending on additional factors.

Most, I don't know. But the top should.

Can you give an example? Not clear on this.

I think your talking about a load balancer setup... Yes this is possible.

loan balancer= 1 Main server/host with multiple backend servers/hosts to allocate traffic to so the load is equally balanced and there's no stress on only one box (a lot of BIG wesbites/companies do this.)

Sorry, for not expressing this clearly in my initial post...

Say, I have a nameserver ns1.myname.com & ns2.myname.com

HostOne hosts my domains aa1.com, aa2.com, aa3.com
HostTwo hosts my domains bb1.com, bb2.com, bb3.com

Can all six above domains have the same (common) nameserver ns1.myname.com? Doesn't the nameserver have to refer to the IP address of the actual machine holding the relevant sites? If so, with two hosts (i.e. at least 2 separate machines), how can you have the same IP address?

What is "dynamic DNS" and is that some black magic to achieve the above purpose?

Also, can I associate my own nameserver with IP numbers provided by free DNS sites such as zoneedit.com? If not, what is the purpose of getting a "free DNS" since all hosts would provide you with a nameserver - either generic (their own) or personal (your own)?

Sorry, I am somewhat confused on this...

Yes, all domains CAN have the same nameserver and same IP address, if I understand what your saying correctly.

The internal DNS settings will refer the domain to the appropriate location on your server/host. The multiple host setup could get complicated but it is possible.

Edit: Any reputable dedicated hosting company, that manages multiple servers for you should do this themselves. Just tell them what you want, and you shouldn't need to worry about it anymore. Even if it costs a bit extra, your better off paying $50 then screwing up your DNS settings.

Thanks very much for your prompt response, Blarian.

To clarify matters further, it is not that the same hosting company is managing multiple servers for me. Actually, it is two completely separate hosting companies.

I guess what I am still unclear about is how both hosts (and all sites at each of these hosts) can work off the same nameserver, when the IP numbers for that nameserver were allocated by only one of those hosts?

Thanks for you continued patience in answering this!
