sometimes, i would often experience this with Dotster as well. I used to check with different providers and WHOIS search to verify. One instance was that i saw that a name was "available", however in actual fact the domain name was 'suspended'. Have you tried registering with others then?

godaddy may be using cached whois info, anyway it's a known fact that their whois check is not accurate/real time.
Do yourself a favor and use another registrar :greenyes:
If you wait too long the name could be registered by someone else in the meanwhile (this is especially true with the recently dropped domains).

Yes - been happening to me a lot lately. They're losing some regs because I have to go elsewhere to check availability.
