Looks like Dropwizard adding some new bidding features to their system. They also catch .ca and .co.uk if anyone is interested.

Just an addition

"Notice to all our valued clients.

Effective immediately Dropwizard has converted to an auction format. This will
not affect approximately 80% of the reservations. If there is no bid on your
reservation it will not be affected.

However for the top names you may now bid.

Unfortunately with the large dollar figure many of the auction sites are making
on their bids they are now able to pay the registrars far larger sums than we
can with our pricing. If I did not make this change we would have lost
registrars. As it is I have not been able to interest new registrars based on
the existing compensation.

To give you an idea in late june early july we landed 3 domains worth $13k+ at
an auction site. Our return was $800. One domain was bid to $6.3K for which we
received $120. At the auction site the registrar would have been paid $6.5K.
Ours received around $400.

If you were a registrar would you prefer a customer paying $6.5K or the $400?

Although I put a voluntary bonus system into effect regrettably most clients
chose to ignore it.

I have held off on this change since Nov / 02 but can't ignore the problem any
longer

Thankyou for your understanding.

Simply place your orders as usual. Where a name is taken you will be offered an
option to bid.

regards

Gordon

A must-do for any registrar now. Next will be Snap. They have already lost registrars and will keep doing do unless they follow suit.

If that happens Bob, where all places go to bidding systems I say bring on WLS.

The next biggest game will be bidding (by drop catchers) for RRP access with Registrars ... if it isn't already ...this should be hot over the next few months ...

It's inevitable that all sites will go to this format now. Dropwizard was the only site that prided itself on not following the pack and now they have sold out...and i don't mean that in a bad way. They have done so because they HAVE TO. They would loose registrars if they did not like Gordon said. I do agree with that. However, I do not like the trends we have seen in the last few months and it is something I knew would happen sooner or later. This is only the beginning folks...

Overall ask yourself would you rather have:

1) A system where you pay the most to get the name (often a grossly inflated overvalued price) and always get beat by the top players and people who can front larger amount of cash (buydomains, ultsearch, others).

=OR=

2) WLS where the first person to back-order a name (at a reasonable price) gets it on a first come first serve basis.

When you take each senario to the extreme I think it's clear which one is necessary to curb the current direction this unregulated drop market is going. It's no longer about who can compete the best, but who will shell out the most money.

July 25th isn't far away.....

The updated FAQ page will be up shortly. To participate in the bidding, simply order the name you want from your Control Panel at DropWizard, and it will take you to the auction automatically.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Happy Bidding Folks! :)

Are you guys planning on lowering the fee from $120? This is twice was pool charges, 8 times what thefirstname charges, 13 times what namewinner charges? If you guys would drop the initial price down more people would use your service.

nice idea jh3.

For DW, lowering initial price is not a problem.
The price will go up high anyway for great name.

Thanks Domnet! I thought the date was going to be around the end of August or 6 months after the implementation of the redemption grace period. But according to the lawsuit it is Oct 11th as you stated.

Unfortunately having more people use our service is not our problem. We've run at 500% of capacity almost since day one.
I need more registrars pure and simple. I have enough business for 6-8 of them.

Actually you're wrong. As I predicted 70-80% of the reservations are going through undisturbed. And because not many of our clients are used to bidding with us even the premiums are going at a bargain price. 3 letter included.

This morning as an examle only had bids on 15% of the names. 85% were untouched.
