Just got some spam that I thought I would share with you. Did you get it too?. Since I got the spam, I assume my email is also in the 1.2 million email addresses that are forsale. Is there anything we can do to shut these clowns down?.

maybe somebody can explain to me exactly why it is that a technology that is 100% dependent on computers to live cannot be easily and conveniently tracked perfectly by anyone at the touch of a button?

is it so unreasonable to be able to determine the physical computer spam (or any email) originates from and the route it took on the internet to get where it was going to?

it's just computers & code! if we as a people are ever going to defeat the spam epidemic, we have to get serious about tracking violators down and prosecuting them.

and I don't want to hear about privacy. nobody is a bigger defender of the rights to free speech and privacy than I am. but when you choose to communicate with me, you give up any perceived right of privacy.

how about it? why exactly is my request so unfeasible?

I've seen serveral emails from that name in my spam folder.

"This list is CAN-SPAM Compliant, please reply to the email to be unsubscribed."

Yea, right...Like I believe someone selling email lists to spammers that were likely illegally spidered from whois records. He's probably just wanting verifications of active addresses to make his list more valuable. That's the problem with this part of the can-spam act.

Imagine walking down the street and some guy walks up to you and yells BUY VIAGRA NOW. Then you turn around and walk away...a minute later you turn a corner and another guy jumps in your face and says BUY A PENIS PATCH NOW!...and then you run away. 2 minutes later, a guy on rollerblades finds you and yells I JUST PUT A TRACKING DEVICE ON YOU AND I WILL SELL THE SIGNAL TO MILLIONS OF PEOPLE SO THEY CAN TRACK YOU DOWN AND YELL AT YOU EVERY DAY. From that day on, you have 50+ people finding you and yelling at you. You can't do anything about it, but walk away. More and more people are selling your tracking device signal. People keep coming and coming. Penis this, viagra that, spam this, spam that, etc.... :)

It seems there may be another targeting domainers. I received a email from myself that I didn't send and an email name I don't use which had virus warnings yesterday. Today I recieved another email with virus warnings from another user on this board but after looking at the headers it's definately not from the user here.

I think it's more targeting small business owners than domainers.

Sorry rewording. Too coincidental that the sender used an email address from a site of a user here.

Ummm... Am I the only one that takes issue with this statement? We communicate with each other via the Internet (this board is a prime example) on a daily basis, but if the act of communication causes us to lose our right to privacy, that would severely limit our desire to communicate (for a good primer on Internet privacy, see http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/ecommerce/privacytext.html). The very fact that the Internet DOES preseve our privacy is one of the very REASONS that it has been so successful.

Spam is more difficult to combat than you might think. Even the "simple-but-effective" methods of eliminating spam aren't as simple or effective as they might seem. One of the problems with your idea is that not everyone is as concerned about stopping the spam as you and I are. Also consider that spammers are usually hackers who know how to spoof IPs and bounce mail off open relays and use spam-trojans to have unsuspecting KaZaA users send their spam for them. This is one of the reasons spam is so hard to control -- even if you do track it down to the computer sending the spam, it is usually an innocent victim of the spammer as well.

This is an interesting link -- somewhat funny, and worth a read if you think you have THE answer for eliminating spam:

You don't have true privacy on this board. If you threatened me, for instance, it would be a simple matter of going to the management and compelling them to turn over all information they have on you. But that wasn't even my point. What I am saying is, if you choose to communicate with ME, then why should you expect to be untrackable and anonymous?

RMF ...

Dear RMF,

Yep, I'm a "proud" recipient of this garbage, too. And frankly, I'm getting sick and tired of hearing how "my" penis is too short, limp, ugly, or whatever, when the only one "I" have is the one I share with my husband. Believe me, if ever there were "toy" such as this that didn't need to be any bigger, fatter, longer, or in better working order, it is his (ours???).

I find it absurd that the idiots who send out that sort of spam can't even bother to filter out the obviously female email addresses from their lists. Have any of the other women on this board been constantly bombarded with this type of junk mail?

I'm tired of hitting the "delete" key or constantly tagging emails such as these as "junk" in my Netscape mail account.

I suppose I should be grateful to know that others are so concerned with my partner's "equipment," but it DOES get boring after awhile.

Anything that can be done to put a stop to this garbage is fine, in my book. You have my total support to go get 'em!!

Best regards,
Sheila
