Hello, my name is Randy and I do networking and computer repair for a living. I would like to expand my services by selling domain names and web hosting. I have purchased a resale account from Wild West Domains, but what do I do now? I know little, to nothing about how to promote a website, or drive traffic to them. I recently have taken classes on web design, and did rather good. I now offer custom website design. I would really like to be able to pull in some extra income off of web hosting and domain name sales. I guess I am just having the starting up blues. Does anyone have any tips for someone just starting out in this business? Thanks for you’re your input and tips!

Right, I should have mentioned that I have read about pay-per-click services, and I use goggle adwords right now. I have also tried programs like "TrafficBlazer" and "1'st position". But despite this, I still get a low hit count, maybe 2-5 hit's per day. The only online sales I have made are from people I have met in person while I was on repair calls. I see in this forum where people get 100's and even 1,000's of hits per day, and I don't see how any of that is possible! Is there a program, company, or website that actually works to get targeted customers to your account? Thanks for the link, it looks very helpful also.

Sorry, I did not know if I could post the URL for sure. The URL is It is simply a mask for my reseller link, as I am sure you would know. Let me know what you think. Maybe a price drop is called for?

On the domain name per se, I think you should change your domain name to something like smart.biz :-D Obviously, the 4 word .com doesn't seem to have much, if any, type ins.

I think your right about the name. I went with that name simply because my successful computer repair business is SmartBizSites. So the link to my main site is *** So I simply picked ***. I will be changing my name as per your tip. But this time I am going to search around to try to find a much better one. Thanks for the Tip!

welcome Randy...

all websites take time to develop traffic...take my new one:

Its been up a month, has 100 pages of content and gets 20 visits per day...

Traffic takes time, keep asking people for links to your website and getting to know people in the industry (getting an account here was a good start)

I would also recommend a new domain, something easier to remember and shorter, but that's your call. Maybe try a .biz domain...?

Just be patient and success will come if you work hard on getting links to your site.

Cheers!

Well, after a few hours of looking, I have decited that I am not good at picking domain names. Do you think the domain name smartbizsites.net is a bad one? My main page is smartbizsites.com, and gets a lot of traffic from the local area where I run my business. Thanks for the help everyone! Im starting to feel better about this already. One more quick thing, Is Pay-Per-Click services like google's AdWords worth it? Thanks Again!

DO NOT USE A .net DOMAIN

Adwords is probably worth it, depending on how much you are paying per click...

Ok, no Dot Net's. What is the reason though? How about smartbizsites.biz? I have that domain already.

Nets dead baby, nets dead :) (will make no sense unless you’ve seen Pulp Fiction)

Seriously, pick your name carefully, as later, after you’ve spent your hard earned $$$ marketing it, changing it will be very difficult and needless to say costly.

There’s no use for it anymore.

.com for business or .biz for business if you can’t get or afford the .com
.info for information
.org for organisations
.us, co.uk etc for country specific products/services

Tips for selecting a good name…

- Keep it short – no more than 12 letters is ideal, the shorter the better (generally)
- Use as few words as possible, one or two is great, three not so good, four (don’t even think about it! :eek:k: )

Good luck!

Yes Randy

Forget all about trying to sell registrations through wwd
You are being undercut on price all over the place.
Even the DNF will sell you wwd registrations cheaper than you can buy

Interesting, I should have asked you guys BEFORE I bought the reseller deal. I would hope to at least get my money's worth back on sales from it.

It doesn't matter. There will always be a bigger fish out there. You can still find your own niche market. For him, it might be his old customers.

Anyways, good luck.

You may want to check out trafficg.com a website promotion company.
