There is some .nft "domains" with Unstoppable domains and Handshake (that's not "real" domains), but is there a launch of an ICANN .nft extension? I don't believe so.

No. First, I'm not totally convinced about the future of this kind of "domains". Even if I think unstoppable domains is doing quite a good job (I know less Handshake. Are their names directly accessible with some browser like Brave? How is the conflict taken care of, here, as there is 2 .nft!?)

And secondly, I think there is a real risk a ".nft" extension may be approved by ICANN in the future, and then, it becomes a mess. I didn't look if something may prevent it or not (has it already been asked and has been rejected for one reason or another, for example).

I have a couple ".x" unstoppable domains "domains", and if I want something in this space, I will use this "extension", because the risk of running into a conflict with an ICANN extension seems low (as it's only 1 letter). On top of this, it looks pretty good and is a little more recognizable.

No ".nft" decentralized domain for me. Not now, not tomorrow. - Only my opinion.

I don't think ICANN will approve of anything that is already in use and accepted, e.g., .eth.

What would make you think that? The idea they must be "good guys"?
I think the opposite argument exists: Fees for them, crushing a nascent competition, showing they're the boss. So, it may even be in their best interest.
If someone wants to get the extension and asks for it while paying the adequate fees to ICANN, I'm not sure they will care about the fact it's "in use" a decentralized way. Maybe, maybe not.

I was thinking if ICANN will accept those DeFi extensions, it's not excluded that they might be merged together and those who own such domains already will keep owning them, of course this is just a theory but not excluded to happen if there will be an established agrement.

They have tried Alternative Root extensions many times before. Never worked don't see it working now.

I keep thinking about the one that failed miserably. I want to say it was Box.net (Box.com now) but can't quite remember... I know they came out with a lot of jazzy TLDs that you could get, but the caveat was that users had to install a toolbar that would essentially assist in rewriting hosts files. Toolbars were a hot thing (to trick people into installing) back in the day, but computer-savvy people never truly trusted them, for obvious reasons.

The way I see it now, and how it might actually succeed, is ICANN being seen as a monopoly over domain names and the companies that are popular for being browsers will end up natively supporting them without an added extension. Opera is already doing this, so I think it's safe to assume people will follow.

Will names be worth thousands? I don't know, maybe a couple will. The timeframe of knowing whether it works or not is much too long for me to know. I'd rather stick to a tried and true method of .com.
And secondly, I think there is a real risk a ".nft" extension may be approved by ICANN in the future
Likely won't be as it's trademarked, along with others. It would be a lengthy legal battle and might even involve government intervention. Way too messy...

With free speech at the heart of discussion now with Section 230 being disputed for something that would give the government even more oversight, I don't think that blockchain is out of the question... It could definitely be a viable solution, especially with everyone getting the Big Tech boot.

I just don't think that I personally can invest in it where it stands today. I might change my mind, as I have experimented with NFTs (unrealized gains--will publish results later).

I feel it's like new domain extensions. They said .INFO and .BIZ were going to be big.

Years later both are not widely used.

Thanks for the link. I didn't know Unstoppable Domains trademarked their new extensions, but I'm not totally convinced this would stop some Icann extensions. Maybe it will, maybe it doesn't. The lower portion of the linked article seems to also believe there may be some conflicts coming.

As for a legal battle, sure. That would probably happen. But IMHO, this way: Icann approves and runs similar extensions, unstoppable domains sues them and goes to court to try to stop them, it lasts years, and they lose in the end. What Icann pretty much "knew" since the start, reason why they didn't bother too much about it.

The trademarking move may be more effective against decentralized competitors. Even if totally decentralized systems with not one entity clearly representing them may not care too much about it either....

Yes, I also do think the blockchain domains can be a great tool and do have their use. I'm not against the system as a whole. I just don't like the .nft extension too much (but yes, why not. It's not necessarily that bad). As said above:

Too much money... but it looks like it can 10x if you just wait for GoDaddy to come. :p

I'd rather be the casino and let others play in my house.

That's how I view the new gTLDs.

It was just a way for them to make money to buy good .com domains.

Colin Campbell invested in Paw/.com
That . global guy did the same with Desktop/.com
