All nnnn .coms are taken!
All nnnn .nets are taken!
There are 17576 LLL .coms.
But there are only 10000 nnnn .coms.

Why nnnn are cheaper than LLL usually?
LLL .nets went for $xxx each.
But nnnn .nets went for $xx each only.

For rarity, its best if you look at the registration dates for a lll.com and a nnnn.com, and you will know which one is rarer.

I think it's funny people talk about how rare a domain is. EVERY domain is rare. There is only 1 of each domain. How much more rare can you get than that? :)

NNN.US are more rare than any of the above and also more rare than NNN in .com, .net, .org, .info, and .biz (you'd have to go to NN.whatever to get rarererer) :-/

...and when looking at the final domain-possible
character, graphics, we find that (courtesy of
IDN) g.com (graphic symbol.com) is rarer than
all of them.

Rarer still.. single graphic .com's that are keyboard
-typeable on many of the world's keyboards :)

Roll on IE7, so that the final piece of keyboard
geography (i.e. the ability to use a graphic in a
domain) can have its day!

(Yes I know about ICANN and 'standards'.. I suspect
that errors ICANN have made in this area, they are
going to have to pay for... And as for searching for
such domains in Google?.. Well, thats just an
algorithm change away..).

Interesting times.

Regards

Richard

Welcome to 2006. Time to move on.
It's like crying why there are no 3-letter .com's in the wild anymore.
The commercial Internet is older than 13 years old.

I think this is missing the point of what is meant by "rare". Both a specific property next to Central Park in NYC and a specific property in rural Oklahoma are equally "rare". There is only one of each. But we don't speak of rural Oklahoma properties as rare.

Why not? Because what we really mean is that substitutes are scarce and highly desirable. This is certainly the case with both LLL and NNN dot.com names, and to a large extent now with NNNN as well. All of them are taken, and there are many developed, branded, massivly popular sites on each.

In the US AOL.com might be more famous than any NNNN name, but in Asia the random seeming 3721.com is so popular that it's the world's 37th most popular site.

This thread is so funny.
If something is taken does not make it rare.

All 100 dollar bills are taken.
All 1 dollar bills are taken.
1 dollar bills are more than 100 dollar bills.
So 1 dollar bills are rarer and more valuable.

Now all mathematicians can jump out the window. :)

Sorry, but that's not even close to being a good analogy. Cash is fungible, fractionable, and nearly unlimited in overall quantity. Short domains are none of those things.

The fact that all members of a class of domains are "taken" is extremely important. It shows that people wanted members of this class so much that they were willing to spend lots of money on them (maybe you don't, but I remember $100 registration fees -- though maybe if I could remember back to when they were free I'd by typing this from my own private island  ) and snapped them up right away.

Just compare .com with other TLD's. If the same .us domain was just as valuable as its .com counterpart, then people would have registered (taken) 10 million .us names as soon as .us opened to the public. But that didn't happen.

You are using the wrong term in this silly discussion. "Scarce" accounts for demand. Property is more "rare" in Jackson Mississippi than in Los Angeles. Property is more "scarce" in Los Angeles.
