For the past couple years 4-digit dot com names have crept up slowly in price, from about $200 each to $300 or so each, where they stalled for a while. Now, finally, they are starting to explode in value. I just finished an analysis of reported sales of NNNN.com names over the past few months, and the results are astonishing!

  • The average sale price so far this month is almost $2500.
  • Going back to July the average sale price is $1,394. And that's *without* including three $50,000 plus sales from August.
  • All combinations of numbers and starting digits are selling.

I've mostly kept quiet about 4N names and only talked about NNN.com names. But now it should be clear to everyone that we are seeing a pattern of solid baseline reseller value growth, along with many, many high priced sales. This is *exactly* what hapened with NNN.com domain names about 4 years ago when they went from occasional decent sales to solid growth and high liquidity. 4N names are now poised to replace NNN.com in the very same category, the $2k to $7k sweet spot for scarce, commodity names. The future should be clear to even those who doubted that plain old numbers could be worth anything. Just check out how many bids they now get at places like Sedo.

I'll try to put out an in-depth report of the numbers in the next month. Meanwhile, here is the list of sales I have since the beginning of July. If you know of a 4N sale not on this list send the info to me right away!

Great info M/S. Will hopefully open the kimono a bit more in the near future. But I gotta say, you are on the right track.

Cheers,

what about NNNNN.com ?

Give it a few years, maybe more. There's always a danger in speculating on domain names which are too close to the reg-fee level, especially if reg-fees keep going up. It's like some black-hole attractor that pulls in anything that lingers under $50 for too long.

If you are looking for something with less risk but huge upside potential I'd pick up as many NNNN.com or even NNN.com names if you can afford those. Keep in mind too that holding and reselling 100 names with a target price of $1000 each is bound to be easier (and cheaper) than managing 1000 names with a target price of $100 each.

Impressive. Now perhaps N-N.com's will appreciate as well, so I can start getting some decent offers for my 4-4.com (yes, that was a sneak advertisement).

Thanks for the report. Do you know if it was an auction or a sale based on an agreed on price?

It was a sale based on an agreed price with no auction format. Congrats to the buyer for picking up a great memorable 4N.com!

I think it helps almost all numeric domains. They are generic, easy to remember, no TM issues, cross all language barriers, easy to type, and can be used for anything. There are a limited number of them. Value should be based on scarcity (N-N, NNN, NNNN in that order)and any meaning to the numbers 6-9, 187, 247, 360, 1234 ect. I think NNNN are under valued at this point. They will go higher. I should say that I'm a long term investor. I'm looking at the domain world 10 and 20 years down the road. I think we will look back at this time and think of what fools we were for not snapping up more numeric domains.

Just completed a private sale on another NNNN.com. There's been a huge increase in the number of offers I'm getting on the 4N's over the past couple months too. I'd bet that the number of inquiries per 4N per week is up by a factor of 10 from just one year ago.
