According to DN Journal, the top three current domain sales of 2006 (so far) are:

• On.com sold for $635,000
• Macau.com sold for $550,000
• Blue.com sold for $500,000

Besides having deep pockets and the buyers wanting them, what else do you think made these domains high value?

Some of the Top sales for 2006 don't even include .com. Check it out.

I think to answer your question, you have to ask yourself this question. What is the value of a unique item, any unique item. A painting, a piece of land, a article of clothing from a celeb, etc... Domains have real value in many ways including their uniqueness. A building might employ many but a.com can employ just as many and with more ease it can transformed. To own a single word .com means you own it for the entire world, not just US or Germany or China, etc... There is no other Blue.com and that means allot. It is unique and in some cases more valuable than real property with less headaches. The world can blue.com but someone in China may never see my store on Park ave. I could give countless examples. Domains are going to grow far beyone this in the next ten years. Save this note, it's going to happen and we're here on the start of the trend. Enjoy the ride. Cheers,

Deep thoughts indeed. But nevertheless I couldn't agree more. Sales we see these days, can seem a bit expensive, but I strongly believe that we've only seen the tip of the iceberg. Good strong valuable names will keep increasing, especially good strong brandable .com's.

I, myself, am holding on to some of my better names :)

Talent like this will make you a millionaire. Most people in domains don't even get how big the great names will be. Five or ten years from now they will be telling stories about the 500K steals in 2006.

Macau.com stands out from the rest. It's China's only legitimate casino gambling outlet and economic development there is booming -- quite different from the Macau I knew which was an outlet to the 6mm Hong Kong people pre-1997. Massive commercial potential is going to be realized with this domain and a hearty congrats to the buyer.

I'll take Blue.com for myself and it's not even close. On.com would be second, and Macau.com third. People can misspell Macau....they have been known for their crazy gambling for a while now, but everybody knows Blue.

Funny you say that... I checked macao.com earlier and it redirects to macau.com -- I guess he owns both now!

Edit: not a redirect, a banner proclaiming macau.com coming soon.

Macau is going to be huge starting in 2007, lots of casinos and resorts going up, many companies from LasVegas and major hotel chains. It will likely be heavily promoted to North America as a new gambling destination, and it's the right time with the baby boomer market coming on. Not to mention all the Asian gamblers within a few hours flight from Macau. On a world scale it will be bigger than Las Vegas in some ways. Macau.com is probably the easiest to brand - makes one think right away of a place and gambling (if not yet, then soon it will), On.com and Blue.com are no doubt great names but would take more work to brand to a product or service. When you think of 'on' or 'blue' does any one product come to mind easily and right away?

My choice is On.com by a long shot. Hard to misspell that one. Nice and short. Kinda rhymes.

Blue is just one of many colors in the spectrum, while "on" only has "off" as an alternate option. On.com could be used in lots of different ways. Yes, it would have to be branded, but so would Blue.com. However, there's no plural version of "on" (ons???) while Blue has "Blues" as its plural.

On.com. That's my choice. And it would be kinda cool to have No.com as well. Imagine having a pair like that?

Everybody knows about Blue and On. I find it surprising that people would take Macau. I know more about gambling than most, and I am sure if you asked 100 random people in the world about Macau you would get many blank stares. I understand it's perceived value, though. It would sure be tough to do any radio ads.

I have all kinds of great Macau names. It's just speculators typing that in.

Macau won't have as much mass appeal as you think. It's not like a bunch of people from the United States are going to be flying over there to gamble. The U.S. companies that are opening up shop over there are mainly trying to capitalize on the manic gambling done by the people in that region. They might not have as much success as you might think....no matter how much money they spend. It's kinda like all of the U.S. companies always talking about China and all of the opportunity. The people in the best position to take advantage of that will be the Chinese, not some know-it-all American...like most of us are. Going into another culture and taking a lot of money out is harder than you might think.

^. You certainly make a valid point, but for what it's worth, macau is going to be a pretty big hit.
