Could use some advise guys. I need an effective over-the-counter sleep aid. herbal stuff is fine too. It's been almost 3 days now since I've slept (great for domaining- bad for my health:eek:k:). Lucky for me, I've been eating healthy lately, gym everyday this week, and taking my supplements so my mind has still been rather sharp. But I'm really starting to feel it today. So what have you taken in the past or do you take that helps?

I've had problems sleeping lately myself. Mostly because I have a significantly high sale in Escrow and I'm worried it'll fall through. :uhoh:

I'm not the right person to give sleep advice though, as it usually takes me 1-3 hours to fall asleep after I hit the bed, but usually a dark, quiet and cool room with clean bedsheets and a nice, fluffy pillow does the trick.

In Norway you can get some expensive natural light sleeping aid pills over-the-counter, but they don't work at all. I'm pretty sure you can get heavier stuff in the US without a prescription.

Sometimes, only dipenhydramine (sp?) is all that will work unless you go into the opiate derivatives and benzos.

I would suggest cannabis indica if available medicinally in your state or country.

no one on earth has ever died from a cannabis overdose.

the founding fathers used the herb for many reasons including to aid sleep.

...you can od and kill yourself on caffeine, alcohol, aspirin, xanax, valium, ambien, water.....

of course cannabis was available otc pre 1937

Get some lavender, and a nice warm cup of cocoa before bed, have a bath and/or a shower. Should help a bit.

I concur a warm bath will help...

American bathtubs kind of suck though.....

Maybe eating some turkey could help :) The tryptophan helps me sleep

Unisom (which is like double strength Benedryl)
very good and effective for me
Long Term use can lead to prostate issues with men
Brand UNISOM pricey so find generic brand

Wal-Marts Equate generic just as effective and 1/3 the price
and NO hang over/drowsy effect as aZooZa pointed out above

Meletonin is often recommended but did nothing for me.
Also used to help combat Jet Lag.
Again, very ineffective for me.
Look for all natural and organic.
May take several days to work.

We give my son melatonin on prescription (in the UK) but I believe it's otc in The US. Works a treat and he has no idea that he's had it so there is no placebo effect.

Other than that - sex does it for me - 30 secs after the big moment and I have trouble keeping my eyes open

Try a quart of Jack Daniels if all else fails. That's a *guaranteed* sleep aid.

I'll try and convince the wife of that..."what's that dear...a headache? I've got just the thing for that..."

Oh, the memories.

Did that once when I had a toothache.

Could not get to the dentist on a weekend.

Jack Daniels - the best local anesthesia made.

Freud and others from his time may argue cocaine is the best local anesthesia made

:cheesy:

The real answer is laudanum. OTC until relatively recently. A little addictive though.

Absinthe was good.

Yes, the cocaine and local opiate derivatives.

But I thought we were talking legal stuff?

Jack Daniels is about 5 miles away.

Absinthe? Cocaine? Opiates?

Absinthe is not what it used to be.

And where I could buy Cocaine and the other stuff, I dare not venture.

Definitely Cannabis.....that and a nice hot herbal tea, non-caffienated of course.

Or if you don't use the kind herb then a nice hot bath and a glass of red wine is perfect.

Stay away from taking pills primarily designed for other ailments like allergies, etc. They are very hard & potentially toxic on your system & liver. Stick to whats natural. :hippie:

poppin' a couple scud nugs in clean glass is my nightly routine - i stay away from pills as they make everything slower the next day.

warm tea, milk, or a sippy sip of a captain & coke also help me relax.
