I have a question to experienced domainers. Please help to build a strategy of how you buy domain.

I found that Pandours(.)com is free to register.

One English word.

What steps should I take to understand that this domain is worth something.

Thanks

Sorry, I don't think that domain has any value. I have never heard of this word, and I am a native English speaker with a large vocabulary. :)

What would you use this domain for?

One of the first things you should know is that there are many unregistered .com dictionary words, because those words don't make sense for websites. So just because a domain is a one-word .com, that doesn't mean it has value.

An important lesson (that I'm still working on learning!) is that instead of buying or registering a bunch of domains that may have a little value, it's better to spend all that money on one domain that does have value. Otherwise, you end up paying renewal fees for domains that will likely never sell.

Other members here can give you many more tips!

Create a list of rules and adhere to them.

  • Look for domains that are taken in all major extensions - The good to great domains were registered a long time ago
  • Look for domains that have multiple obvious end-users - The more the better
  • Buy domains that have had multiple offers - Creates a reseller safety net incase you can't find an end-user
  • Buy domains at auction - Set a price limit and don't exceed it

Thank you folks. Let's go further then.

2 first fules:

  • Look for domains that are taken in all major extensions - The good to great domains were registered a long time ago
  • Look for domains that have multiple obvious end-users - The more the better

Couple of month ago I bought 2 domains MyInvest(.)ca and BankDeposit(.)ca
The first one was a fresh reg, the second one - Backorder.

1. All the major extensions ( com, biz, org and net ) were taken (at that time I didn't look at this rule, just had a feeling those are good names)
2. I think there are many end-users for those names

What's next?

What's your end-user profile? Who would be able to use myinvest.ca and bankdeposit.ca? What are the benefits in having those specific domains?

MyInvest is good for any type of financial institution such as Bank, RESP and RRSP programs, traders, real estate investments, investment blog sites

BankDeposit = hmm . No idea. This is not a product and not a service. What else then?

You forgot.. What are the specific benefits to using those specific domains?

The answer is: There is none.

Banks and Real Estate professionals already have established websites. What's the benefit to their business?

IMO, the key to domain investing is buying generics. They will always have value and there will always be end-users.

The only problem is their expensive.. So keep your eyes open and look for a deal.

Let's conclude.

MyInvest(.)ca = $0

RealEstateInvest(.)ca or RESPInvest(.)ca, for example, are good candidates. Correct?

I'd recommend starting with .coms. The market is bigger.

Your first rule is

  • Look for domains that are taken in all major extensions - The good to great domains were registered a long time ago

It means that in this case we are talking only about registered domains, which I need to buy or won in auction. Correct?

What about new registrations? How to work with this rule, if .COM is free or was dropped?

Your Girlfriend is your Goal.
Without a Plan you would either get AIDS or a Baby.
The goal is buy low and sell high.

The plan is learn as much as possible and buy small until I'll understand which names are good and which are bad.

Johnn, you deal with this stuff many years. What are your recommendations?
Goal and plan is too general.

What about new registrations? 99% of them a garbage.

Buy from drop catchers / auctions.

Drop catchers like Pool, SnapNames or FreshDrop?
What will you recommend? There are many of them.

Thanks.
