Big organizations are going to have domain names with their own ending. If the new reform of domain system will be approved next year then domain ending will be whatever! After these reforms anyone who will be able to pay $100 000 can apply for his own domain. There are 14 domains suggested at this moment but many more will added soon. This means we can meet domains such as .mail, .web or .kid. Big cities will have their own domains too - .berlin, nyc for New York etc. Organization ICANN that is directing internet domains will be deciding about this in September 2007.

Woops I forgot the link to Article

I have seen the original 'article' - a blog entry - and no reference to source there! Any clear indications please as to source on this 'news'?

It's a big waste of money. If they are going to spend that kind of money they should look for a .com name related to there business on the auction market.

That would devaluate all existing extensions ... especially the non .com's

We should all worry about the future of .INFO, .BIZ, .etc in case this scenario happens.

Neh, I don't think we should worry about it .. ;) .com's will still be the most desirable extension..

If Microsoft bought Microsoft.software , then most people would still type in microsoft.com when they want to visit MS' website. Websites with random extensions will need marketing to get visitors, while everyone knows of the .com !

This just looks like a "reversed subdomain" to me. People will first need to go to msn.com and click on a link before they are sent to messenger.msn.com . Noone will guess that msn.com has a subdomain called "messenger." , unless they have been told so already through advertisements etc.

Well, that's my 2 cents..

It would make ICANN a lot of .money .Business, .sex, .vacation. If the 100K owners could turn around and sell the prefix it may be worth the $. With all the new extensions available I guess they figure it would push people back to using the search engines. I wounder if Rupert Murdoch is going to purchase .WSJ or .NEWS. If .2 .people want the .best .name will it go to .auction? .1.2.3.woopee.If it is more than a lot of .BS .I .think (for what ever thats worth) that it will make .com .worth .Big .Bucks .God ...---... .Us and the rest of the extensions.

$100k for .hotels seems cheap!

whoever buys it could potentially registrar .hotels restricting registration to only hotel owners and charge a hefty reg fee. mariott.hotel, doubletree.hotel, ramada.hotel, waldorf.hotel etc etc., A big problem with that would be that most if not all of these big hotel chains already have an online presence with a good .com name, so why would they pay big $ for a .hotel?

and why would a domainer even speculate knowing that for every new .whatever they register they are helping devalue/dilute their already owned .com .net .biz etc.. portfolios? with an increase in supply comes a decrease in demand. but this also will depend on how the addition of a plethora of new extensions will impact SEO.

This will devalue all non-established extensions. Those that are firmly established will be worth much more particularly dot com.

Anyway since when was this news? This has been in the pipe for a couple of years. Anyone that follows ICANN developments will be well versed in all of this!

I guess you just have to go with the flow. I'd love to own a share of something like .hotel if it ever happens.........perhaps using the new shared ownership system being set up at the moment by DCG. However, 100k just to apply for a .whatever seems a bit costly!

I dunno if this is actually going to happen or not..I would give it more consideration if the article was on ICANNs website that's for sure
