I received an email from Paypal saying that they believe someone has
access to my account.

Dear PayPal User,
We recently reviewed your account, and suspect that your PayPal account may
have been accessed by an unauthorized third party.

They give you a link to Paypal if you want to see your acct.

It opens into a standard looking page at Paypal.
And, you enter the info onto that opened site.

At first, I thought maybe it is true. And, if you hit the link, it
shows a IP number as the address.

That is when I immediately changed my mind.

I am now 99.9% sure that it is fraudulent.

None of the IP's (obvious and hidden) do not go back to Paypal.

So, do not use the link in that email.

All they are doing is capturing your login data. And, then, they
send you to your accual Paypal acct so you are not alarmed.

I knew the crooks were doing this with credit card companies.
But, I guess Paypal users are the next victum.

Also, don't try to outsmart them by putting in an incorrect acct name.
The script can pick it up from your cache.

BE CAREFUL.

I NEVER click on a link directly from an e-mail but ALWAYS "copy shortcut" and paste it onto the browser's address box, so I could see the *real* URL.

Protect Yourself from Fraudulent Emails

At PayPal, protecting your account's security is our top priority. Recently, PayPal members have reported suspicious-looking emails and fake websites. These emails are not from PayPal and responding to them may put your account at risk. Please protect your PayPal account by paying close attention to the emails you receive and the websites you visit.

Please use the following tips to stay safe with PayPal:
Safe Log In: To log in to your PayPal account or access the PayPal website, open a new web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer or Netscape) and type in the following: https://www.paypal.com/

Greeting: Emails from PayPal will address you by your first and last name or the business name associated with your PayPal account. Fraudulent emails often include the salutation "Dear PayPal User" or "Dear PayPal Member".

Email Attachments: PayPal emails will never ask you to download an attachment or a software programme. Attachments contained in fraudulent emails often contain viruses that may harm your computer or compromise your PayPal account.

Request for Personal Information: If we require information from you, we will notify you in an email and request that you enter the information only after you have safely and securely logged in to your PayPal account.

Often, fraudulent emails will request details such as your full name, account password, credit card number, bank account, PIN number, Social Security Number, or mother's maiden name.
If you think that you have received a fraudulent email (or fake website), please forward the email (or URL address) to [email protected] and then delete the email from your mailbox. Never click any links or attachments in a suspicious email.

People can do amazing things... I remember when I signed up for my Gmail account... I hadn't even used it and I already had a couple of spam emails in my inbox

This kind of scam is called phishing. No one needs to know your paypal email, just any email for you. If it happens to be your paypal email, then that is how they got your paypal email. It is entirely phraudulent. Obviously, they do not need many of these emails to be successful to end up with information to really harm people.
