After holding photographer.com for 10 years, Blake Newman sells the domain name for $133,000. Despite an industry average of less than $10,000 for domain names, this may signal a rebound in domain name investing.

What puzzles me with these reports is what motivates anyone want to brag about the exact price they got to attract the tax department, or why the buyer would want the price to be known to every tom dick, and larry.

Unless there is some benefit in public disclosure, like the 'from the left to the right hand' scam to artificial raise the perceived price of a specific domain. The seller could always say "I paid $130k for this domain, I want at least $200k if you want the name', or 'I need the money urgently, so I'm forced to sell my $133k name to you for $50k'. Kaching. Kaching.

I'm not saying that every deal should be suspect unless proven innocent, but that the loopholes to do so is incredibly big and open to manipulation. What I do suspect is that names are changing hands for these amounts and more, but on the quiet and under strict NDA.

What puzzles me is why he put out a press release saying he sold the domain when the WhoIs record still shows him as the registrant and admin contact. :)

Just like Google's stock selling for almost $300 now means that all tech companies should have stock selling for 100s of dollars again...

I think he did right to sell this domain. If he could not justify holding a domain at this price, it is doubtful whether anyone could see a return on the investment at this level. Whilst, it is a good domain, it can only really apply to a small niche company rather than a wider industry.

Do your research and you will find that the buyer can very easily afford the amount mentioned.

I'm guessing he will turn the name for a much higher profit to an industry related business or possibly develop it into a photographer's portal.

I was thinking this name could make more than 100,000 a year if developed into a portal to photographers.

Only if you could get them to all cough up for the traffic you would be offering. Tough call perhaps. The problem is they all need to be local to the Clients and then you would have to get the message out to clients that you have the best directory to provide them with a local photographer.
