Hello. I need advice/help please, on whether a name is available or when it will be? And, how I can obtain it? Being a college student if it goes to some auction (?) then I **won't** be able to afford to take part. When replying, please note I do not know much about domain acquisitions at all.
Back in December 2004 I registered the domain in its .org, co.uk & .net variants. I use a UK registrar and am pretty happy with them. The .com one though was already registed but hadn't been used at all for a couple've years from what I could see in the Internet Archive machine, and wasn't in use. It was registered by some person in America with Melbourne IT Australia.
I enquired to them - in retrospect probably a mistake - but I didn't know any better.
Email from Melbourne IT, Australia's "namesbyrequest" service

We have received confirmation of your acceptance of the Terms and Conditions of Melbourne IT's Names By Request Service and your
expression of interest regarding the following Domain Name(s):
Requestor Name: removed, Email Address: mine.removed, Requested Domain Names: DOMAINNAME.com -----
At the same time I bought the single-name expirefish.com watch facility to try and grab it, though it didn't work; apparently, the watch on domain.com is still active, can't login to their website but've emailed expirefish.com support today. MelbourneIT subsequently sent me a follow-up email - again in December - saying they'd "been successful in securing" it. Gee. I asked how much it was as I wouldn't be able to obtain it - being a a college student - if it was prohibitive. They replied: "The cost of registering a Domain Name through our Names By Request service is - 1 year Purchase Price = USD$60" , 2 year Purchase Price = USD$95".
That was around £40-60GBP not to mention the cost of having to transfer it to the UK registrar that my domain (the non .com variant) is with and then register it with them. I couldn't afford it and since it was daylight robbery as far as I was concerned, I didn't want to pay the appalling cost.
It was registered by someone who never used it and I don't want to be extorted to get it back. I'd rather not work with Melbourne IT period as I don't like the way they seem to do business. Sadly, that seemed to be that.
However, on July 9th 2005, I received an email to the address listed on the Whois info for DOMAINNAME.net/org. Both were identical and looked auto-generated. I hadn't heard of people sending it before. This was email:
"I am writing to inform you DOMAINNAME.com will be expiring around 14 th July 2005. There is a good chance that there will be several interested parties attempting to capture this domain when it expires, these will vary from parties with a genuine interest to domain name speculators otherwise known as cyber squatters who often put large price tags on such domains. We are domain acquisition specialists and I felt that as the owner of DOMAINNAME.net, you would have a much more genuine interest in acquiring DOMAINNAME.COM. If you would like us to try and acquire this domain on your behalf then please let me know at least 24 hours prior to 14 th July 2005 by email or phone...".
Needless to say I'm not interested in going through them.
Query from: internic.net/whois.html (minus domain name)7 today:
Domain Name: ....com
Registrar: MELBOURNE IT, LTD. D/B/A INTERNET NAMES WORLDWIDE
Whois Server: whois.melbourneit.com
Status: PENDINGDELETE
Updated Date: 10-jul-2005
Creation Date: 15-mar-2005
Expiration Date: 15-mar-2006

I haven't used and haven't accounts with any of the domain acquisition websites people mentionn in threads here but had a quick search on them just now. A search on enom for the .com domain name shows: Type: ClubDrop Close date: Jul 16 2005 12:00AM.
Some site called pool.com suggests it's got a deletion date of 2005-07-16 and allows backordering. Likewise snapnames/snaback?.com. All costing sixty dollars at least. :-/
In terms of both economically and safely, what's best to get the .com variant of the domain?
What I would like to know is, IS the domain available to buy, and when/would I be able to do that??? How much might it cost?
My domain (well, the .net and .org and .co.uk variant) are with the registrar I want to continue to use and transfer it to if necessary: 123reg.co.uk (owned by Pipex).
