PLEASE READ - Puzzled!

I miss typed a url earlier and discovered something.

type into the browser:

wwwlycos.com

Obviously i missed a dot out but it goes to another site. I then tried: wwwgoogle.com and it went straight to google. I'm really puzzled about this. I'm using IE6 by the way!

Where's the problem?

wwwlycos.com is prolly owned by the company that owns the site it redirects to;
wwwgoogle.com is prolly owned by google.

they just registered the name with the www at the start of the name to catch anyone who mistakenly types what you did.

To solve your mystery perform a whois lookup on wwwlycos.com & wwwgoogle.com

but normally in ie it wont let you open a site, it searchs for it if you havn't entered www. first.
I see gulli.com have entered the whois info under google.com.

Dean, there is no restriction on registering domains that begin with www.

For instance, wwwdnforum.com is available right now if you wanted it. I wouldn't recommend it though.
