Personally, they clearly have MONEY on their mind but provided a rosy statement about moving the auction so it ends on a "business day" Monday instead of Sunday.. The email stated:

As the weekend quickly approaches I wanted to inform you as a participant in the “opens.com” auction at Pool.com that we have extended the closing of the auction by 24 hours such that it will close on a business day (Monday). We hope this will provide you some added convenience and allow you to spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon with friend and family.

I had several email's with Pool.com's CEO Richard Schreier about this and I had let him know that I think they went the Wrong route in moving the auciton and the way the email was worded.

So what do you think of them moving the auction from it's "normal" end date of Sunday, to a Monday?

Richard always asked:

As for closing ALL auctions on a business day, I’d love to hear the feedback from the people who read your (removed)… how many of the readers care if an auction closes on a Sunday or a Monday? How many readers believe that in a closed auction where the participants are defined in advance that changing the closing date will affect the auction outcome? And if so, in what way?

I will make sure Richard here's what you think.

I questioned that a little as well, but didn't see a "time frame" the auction can, could, should, will run...

The rosy picture painted by the email sent by Pool.com is just BS! This is about Money and Pool didn't think the auction would do as well ending on Sunday!

Also pointed out on another forum, right from pool's site.

"In the case of a domain backordered by multiple users, a short 3-day auction will take place and the winning bid will replace our standard fee."

I must of missed the part where it said, if the domain happens to end on a "non-business day" the auction will be 4 days... 5 days... etc

If they would of pushed ALL of the auctions that would of ended Saturday or Sunday to Monday.... fine

If they would of been streight about why they wanted to move this one auction to end on a business day... fine

this whole opens.com thing stinks; I've been monitoring it for weeks; had it backordered every where; through api's the whole lot; on the day I try to b.o. it from pool I couldn't get in to my account all day.

watch this space it's going to happen again with "pym.com"

I know what open means..just doesn't seem like many practical uses for the domain. To each their own. Not to say I wouldn't buy it, I just wouldn't pay much for it.

I questioned that a little as well, but didn't see a "time frame" the auction can, could, should, will run...

The rosy picture painted by the email sent by Pool.com is just BS! This is about Money and Pool didn't think the auction would do as well ending on Sunday!

I'm sure they will say this happen for technical problems

Just because you win a domain at Pool.com don't make the mistake of thinking that you're going to actually ever have it in your account.

I won a pronounceable 4-letter dotcom domain on June 5th on Pool.com. Despite repeated emails to them, I still do not have the domain in my account. That is FOUR MONTHS ago.

They have never once contacted me regarding their failure to get the name in my account, nor have I received a refund for the name.

Instead, I get boilerplate "we're working on it" nonsense answers to my queries with no specifics as to what the problem is.

These guys could very demonstrably care less about their customers.

Pool wanted it to end on a "Business Day", so any bidders could spend time with Family and Friends..

I wonder why they didn't care about all the other auctions ending this weekend and those bidders Family and Friends...

ONE bidder in 3 days does not seem like a success or good idea to Extend it. Ending at $4,600 I'm sure was also NOT a price Pool was expecting Opens.com to end for!

Without that one bidder, Pool would of only pocketed $3K. The Proxy bidder "NameBulls" won it on a security bid, on the 5th. NameBulls was the high bidder on 10-3 but placed a second proxy bid even though they were still winning at $3K. Bidder "Patent" place a bid with approx 2 minutes left in the auction, with a couple more bids and never beating the proxy... with the auction ending at $4,600.

This "extending" the auction to end on a "business day" did not help pool out imo!

I just wanted to post an update as Pool.com's CEO has posted his reply:

Richard Schreier
It is interesting to point out with all the hype about extending an auction closing being a money grab when now that it’s all over, opens.com sold for $4,600 and the winning proxy bid was submitted to the system on Sunday. I would hardly call this a money grab by any means (and that was not our intent as previously stated). And fewer than 13% of the qualified bidders actually placed a bid.

I take great pride in the time I have been here at Pool.com to ensure the integrity of our auctions and I welcome any direct discussion about our efforts and the results they are producing. If you have or have ever had a concern about our auction integrity, I would like to hear from you personally, email me at [email protected].

Hindsight is 20-20 of course. Had there been intense interest in the final moments of this auction where something technical could have gone wrong, at least our staff would have been on hand to deal with it right away. As it turned out, it wasn’t necessary. I would agree that extending the auction had no financial impact, as I originally predicted. And I still believe extending was prudent.

~Richard also asked me a handful of questions, so I wanted to share those with you and my replies back. Below are those Q & A:

Did extending the auction change your bidding behavior?

Yes! It made me question the truth behind extending the auction. What made "Opens.com" any better or worse then any other domain name ending that Sunday that was NOT extended. I think extending the auction added false praise to the domain which created an inflated value.

Do you think the auction closed at a higher value because it was extended?

Yes. I think extending the auction added false praise to the domain which created an inflated value because of it's "special attention".

Do you think extending the auction closing was ethical?

Considering when the auction started, the date showed the auction ended on 10-5-2008. Stated on your web site:
In the case of a domain backordered by multiple users, a short 3-DAY auction will take place and the winning bid will replace our standard fee". This common practice stated on your web site was changed. Opens.com did get Special Attention and from what I understand, Opens.com was the ONLY domain name that had it's end time extended to end on a "Business Day". I think it was unethical to extend only One Auction.

Did Pool.com provide you with sufficient notice of the auction extension?

Yes, but I strongly question the "story" behind extending the lone auction.

Do you believe the auction extension gave you an advantage or disadvantage and if so why?

Disadvantage. As I stated earlier, I think the domain name was given false value as being the golden child. People assumed the domain is "Great" and that's why Pool is extending the auction. Secondly, as an investor I want the best deal I can find and at times, weekends is when that "can" happen. Being moved to a "business day" took away any advantage to any investors that works on Saturday and Sunday.
