Hi everyone, I wanted to get your thoughts on a specific question. I’ve been noticing more and more domain extensions with .io lately.

Is there any real advantage to buying a domain with this type of extension? Or is it better to stick with the more traditional ones like .com, .fr, or .net?

There are no good COMs for sale. Corporates have left us with very little options. You can't find a good one word dot-com even with a good budget today. Investing in .io is honestly, its your call.. Every year, there's a new trend.. Of late, it was .si. Do it if you are willing to spend bucks, and take risk.

.io is great for tech-focused brands, but .com is still king for trust and recognition. Choose based on your audience and goals.

If you're planning to be a global brand in the long term, .com is your best best. Since .com has a long history from 90's onwards, majority of the .com's are taken and you'll find them available on aftermarket domain marketplaces like ours and many others.

.fr, aka ccTLD's if you're business is country based.

.io is popular among SaaS software providers (due to Google registering .io for their developer conference and took on from there) and still there may be some decent / one word names available for registration.

also, if you are from France > you have 2 great events every year there. NDDcamp.alsace (in Strasbourg) and NDDcamp.fr in Paris (usually in September).

Both are free to attend. If you have difficulties registering > let me know, I will contact you directly to the organizers (I know them well - very nice guys). Best!! H

It's true that it's very difficult, if not impossible, to find a .com name that is not already taken. You can forget this. The only option is buying one that is already registered, which can be expensive.

If you buy anything other then .com, and .com is already registered. What does that imply, legal issues down the line?

Hi, you are 100% correct. For this reason we have created this free tool for you to be able to follow the .com auctions accross various marketplaces (large and small) and be able to get your gems cheap :)

.. and, this is all done without any referral links.. even more: we have recently integrated live Majestic data :)

How do you like it?

Whether to buy a .io domain name or a traditional .com, .net, etc. domain name depends on the company's business positioning, target audience, and brand strategy.

Advantages of .io domain names:

1. Technology and innovation
.io domain names are often regarded as the abbreviation of "Input/Output" and are closely related to computer technology. Therefore, they have extremely high recognition and professionalism in the fields of technology, the Internet, and innovation. It can provide a modern and cutting-edge brand image for technology startups, developer communities, technology blogs, etc.

2. Simple and easy to remember
.io domain names are short and easy to remember, suitable for brand promotion and marketing. Its short and powerful characteristics make it more advantageous in word-of-mouth promotion and advertising.

3. Rich resources
Compared with .com domain names, .io domain names have more registered resources, especially for some popular words, it is easier to find unregistered domain names. This provides more options for startups and emerging brands.
4. Internationalization and global applicability
Although .io is the country code top-level domain name (ccTLD) of the British Indian Ocean Territory, it has transcended geographical restrictions and become a universal domain name suffix. It is suitable for multinational companies or websites targeting the global market.
5. Relatively low cost
For some popular .com domain names, especially short and meaningful domain names, the registration or purchase costs may be very high. .io domain names are relatively low in registration and renewal costs.
6. Personalization and uniqueness
.io domain names are relatively rarely used, so they can provide a more personalized brand image for companies or individuals

Advantages of traditional domain names (such as .com, .net):
1. High brand awareness
.com domain names are the most widely used top-level domain names with extremely high brand awareness and trust. Users are more likely to remember .com domain names and subconsciously think they are more reliable.
2. Industry versatility
.com and .net domain names are suitable for a variety of industries without specific field restrictions. They still dominate the traditional business field.
3. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Advantages
Although search engines' preference for domain name suffixes is gradually weakening, .com domain names may still get better rankings in search engine results in some cases.
4. High global acceptance
.com domain names are widely accepted worldwide and will not affect website access due to geographical restrictions

Recommendations:
If your business is in the field of technology, Internet or innovation, and your target audience is a young, technology-driven user group, .io domain names are a very suitable choice.
If your business is more traditional or needs to target a wide global market, .com domain names are still the safest choice.
For some specific local businesses, you can consider using localized domain name suffixes (such as .fr) to enhance regional relevance and user trust.
In short, when choosing a domain name suffix, you should consider factors such as business positioning, target audience, brand strategy, and budget.
