Did you even pay attention to what the article was saying? This tech has been around for ages, it still amazingly useless in its current form (although is very promising and we'll see some leaps forward in the next decade or so I imagine), and it takes something like eight minutes to write a 30 character message.
This was merely a tech demonstration showing something practical, and that there is currently some buzz about. If this tech had been at this stage a year and a half ago, you can bet your arse that they simply would have said "change your facebook status using only the power of your mind" or some other garbage likethat.
It's populist crap that's riding on the coat tails of something else that is popular.

Now, for those of you that were gobsmacked by this, I recommend you read into some of the technophilosophical musings of Masamune Shirow, and then notice hos this monkey is using it's brain to control a robotic arm (methinks typing with this robotic arm would actually be a lot faster than direct brain input).
