I need to do a practical joke (something that won't get me fired) on a female co-worker. Any ideas ?

Especially with a woman. I'd pass on making the joke b/c of how easy she can play the harassment card on you.

Don't.
Anytime you want to do or say anything to a co-worker, think of the scenario of them getting fired, being angry about it, and digging through their mind for cause to bring a lawsuit. As a boss once told me, anything you say or do, think of yourself sitting on a witness stand trying to explain it to a judge and jury.
You may be friends now, but hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Switch her keyboard to a different layout:

"To switch a keyboard layout in Windows XP, go to the Control Panel (make sure it's in "Classic View" mode) and click on Regional and Language Options. Under the Languages tab, view Details. Click on Add and find "United States-Dvorak" in the list. Now you'll see Dvorak show up in the drop-down menu of default input languages. Choose it and click Apply."

Then install the Blue screen screensaver:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Miscellaneous/BlueScreen.mspx

Enjoy.

even better. take a screenshot of the computer with the icons shown as it would normally upon start up (no windows open, or programs open). Then set this screenshot as the background. Then right click on the desktop. A drop down menu will come up on "Arrange Icons BY" go down to the "Show Desktop Items" and unselect it.

Now the background picture will always look like the original computer but clicking on the icons won't do anything. have fun and laugh at their frustration!

Let's just keep adding on here.

Then take her mouseball out and instead put in a rubber ball. It will still work-sometimes, but she'll go crazy trying to move her mouse around.

Then download the vista upgrade prank http://www.rjlsoftware.com/software/entertainment/vista/download.shtml

It simulates upgrading to windows vista (in reality it does nothing)

"Upon closing the upgrade a full screen Vista logo appears with the Vista startup sound making it appear as though the system is running Vista. After some load time the user is presented with a Mac OS X desktop with a little bit of Windows flavor. After all, the visual features in Vista already exists in Mac OS X - right? Double-clicking the desktop or clicking 5 times will close the fake Vista desktop and the gag program will exit."

To top it all off download fake shutdown. http://www.rjlsoftware.com/software/entertainment/fakeshutdown/

It simualtes a fake shutdown that turns the screen black for an extended period of time after the user initiates shutdown sequence. Afterwards, it says it was just a joke!

But not before you're both fired! :)
