So what do you think is a better investment? Buying a bunch of domains at 1-5k/piece or buying one or 2 at mid level xx,xxx prices?

if your at 1k-5k your gonna find quality, at xx,xxx you'll certainly find quality. I would go with 1 at xx,xxx, and take the xx,xxx you would have spent on another high priced name and get a few x,xxx names. Gives you some diversity.

I think there is not too much difference right now in quality between 5k domain name and 20k domain name. Basically you will see that many people that ask 5 digits for the domain names that don;t worth thaat much. If you are new to the industry and deversify your investment and buy few domains
instead of one, it is always better. Check my threads, I am posting at least one generic domain name for sale a week, and most of them cost less than 5k

Well, your new domain better earn better than the current interest rate or it's a serious waste.
HSBC Direct is offering 5% on a basic savings account.
That's 4 dollars per month for each thousand USD invested.
(100,000 USD would earn over $400 a month.)
It's important to remember this before investing 1K for something that might only make 4 dollars a month.

If you have the money $100k or abouts, buy a decent name and make a website, that way you increase the value of the domain and earn a stable income from the site.

You will find as many answers as there are domains available in those prices ranges.

Quality is subjective (and you'll find lots of people setting their own standards on what quality is to them), what you should be really looking for names that generate revenue whether they cost x,xxx or xx,xxx.

But you should first define what your ultimate goal is for purchasing the names in the first place.
Is it to generate rev off parking? or off adsense from small sites?
Is it to build a site(s) that will offer services which will keep growing as time goes by.
Etc...

Take a lesson from the Investors now buying into big portfolios, They're buying specific domain portfolios as a means to achieve a planned goal, i.e capture a share of a specific market or to enhance a service that they already have.

Of course there also others that buy to resell or buy names as collectibles, each one a has their reasons.

The point is know what your target is and buy the names that you know (by researching, studying either on your own or through a consultant(s)) which would be most advantageous in achieving your target.
