I changed nameservers this morning, but WHOIS information has still not been completely changed. i.e. some have it as old nameservers, others have it as new nameservers.

How long can this process take?

On the average, 24 hours.

This is the one trouble with rapid DNS: people are starting to expect it'll only
take at least 5 minutes up to 24 hours for it to happen. While it's reasonable,
people should bear in mind that several factors are at play as to how soon the
domain name will resolve, and no single entity controls all those factors.

How long DNS changes take to propagate to different parts of the internet and how long the central database and individual WHOIS services take to update their databases are two different things.

I think.

Also, I think the the time that DNS propagation and WHOIS updates take vary considerably according to what the extension is.

Actually the main reason why it takes longer for propagation and WHOIS to
update is because of the 'net user's local ISP: it depends on how soon and
how often they query the root servers and update their cache to reflect the
change/s.
