Recently I offered an appraisal opinion on a domain with a crappy .ext. I thought I'd share my remarks in the platinum lounge, concerning the issue of attaching strong keywords to very weak .ext's.
Whether it's xxx.vc, or sex.ph, these names and all those that sail on the same boat, are worthless in my opinion. You can have the best keyword, but when it is attached to a shitbird .ext that no one knows, it diminishes the domain's value to $0 or less. It's kind of like a car that has a really cool name, brand, color, and perhaps a few other neat features, but is missing it's fricken engine! The .ext drives the domain. Attach a .com to a powerhouse keyword, and that name is simply, DRIVEN!
I, like millions of others have never heard of the .vc tld or any of its sisters or brothers. Most don't know what country, commonwealth, or territory they represent......and to top it off, how many of "us" really care?! The point is, as long as there are other well known and commonly used .ext's that continue to be the driving force behind popular keywords, then other less known .ext's like .vc will likely remain at -or- close to zero value.
Sure, alternative ext's have there place in this world, like with vanity applications including email, or redirection, and are probably also quite nifty if running a small business on some isolated island somewhere off the coast of Thailand. But let's face it, as long as the popular ext's continue to be the driving force behind the internet and ecommerce, these other unknown (or less known) ext's will be at best, back seat passengers, or worse, excess baggage riding shotgun IN THE TRUNK.
Happy Thanksgiving all.
