Received a request to transfer I did not initiate. Should I be worried?

Hey guys,

I got an email from a popular registrar indicating that my domain was to be transferred and to click the link to proceed with the transfer.

I obviously did not so no transfer will take place.

But should I be worried or concerned here?

I have never had this happen to me

Happened to me at enom... just make sure the domain is locked and obviously don't confirm the transfer. This is what a rep over there told me to do.

Any idea why someone would do this? Is this like a mistake or an attempt to steal the name?

Most likely an attempt to steal the domain. I am sure they are going after unlocked domains.

Sometimes it's a mistake, other times a deliberate but impossible attempt to steal a domain. Nowadays, it can't happen without an authorization code and only the registrant has access to that.

Or a hacker with access to the registrants email account. Deny the request, change your email password, and check your box for virii. Or it could be a phishing and/or malware attempt. Rinse & repeat above.

Not like the old days, when you got a transfer request it was an opt out deal, you needed to tell them if you did NOT want the transfer to go ahead.

I have done it mistakenly (entered wrong extensions) in the past.

And every now and then I get one as well and assume it to be the same scenario...a goof.

But, do make sure it is locked, etc.

do not have any auth codes in your inboxes , local files on desktop, in any forum's PM (DNF & NP i can trust blindly.. no offense to any other forums ).
Auth codes are your keys and should be treated as CVV or pass key

secondly, always keep your domaining email less visible to public and should not be subscribed to any websites newsletter etc.
Keep it seperate. No BS in your inbox other then your domains and hostings

we tend to have passwords of everything with some common sequencing /trend.
your primary / domain email id password should have absolutely different trend. ensure this .. you loose email id , you loose everything!

again, will mention, take privacy policy for your key domains. most of registrar offers it free , many or 1st year...

leading domain selling platform has now domain linked to registrar, so if you have listed your domain in BUYNOW, and someone buys it, transfer processs is initiated automatically.. check that as well.

lastly , lock all your domains (and any additonal security for your key domains) ,
do not click on any link where it mentions to review the agreement/transaction/ etc..

precuations are the best way to avoid troubles... do it

I received as many as 20+ transfer requests on 1 domain, all from Godaddy... I contacted them about it and they said theirs nothing they can do. It was a Godaddy customer who was initiating the transfer requests and they couldn't do anything? couldn't send that person a email? Please.

I got bored with it and deleted them every time I got one.

Finally, somebody wrote me and asked me to unlock the domain, I asked if he was the one who initiated the requests and he confirmed it was.. He told me the name was available and he registered it and it's his domain.. He was completely clueless to the fact it was already registered, 6 years registered at another Registrar. What a moron.

It could be mistake, and it might be intentional. I've had it happen to me, and I have also made similar mistakes in requesting transfers. Like others said, just make sure it's locked at that there's nothing odd going on.

Really sorry to drudge up this thread again.

Over the past several weeks I have received the same transfer request (almost a total of ten).

And they don't seem to be stopping.

The domain is insanely valuable or anything, but I'm not sure if there is any action I should be taking to stop them as I am not initiating these requests.
