It's supposed to be 30 days right? A domain I am eyeballing has been sitting in redemption for nearly 2 months now.

Should I call the registrar and have them release it to me? Can they get in trouble for leaving it in redemption that long?

As far as i'm aware different extensions have different red periods.
With my registrar the red for an .info is 10 days only, but a .co.uk it's 3 months.
I guess what im trying to say is, does it depend on individual registrars' terms as to when its released from their registry?
I'd call them and ask.

if the domain is in redemption it cannot be sold to you or anyone other than the original registrant. The most the registrar can do is make sure the name actually deletes. If the name is a COM the redemption period is only 30 days, anything longer than that would point to system error and if you bring it to their attention they can ensure the name deletes.
