Maybe this is a dumb question, when a domain drops at 2 pm of the very day, how long will it be available? When will the registrars be able to update their WHOIS data?

I tried to reg some not-so-hot dropped names manually, some worked and some didn't, for how long should I try before quitting?

If you know the names are not-so-hot , why you want to register them the moment they drop. Not many people would spend $$ or much time on such names. So just wait. Or put $8.75 for such names at namewinner.com and let them do it for you.

Well, I found it five minutes before it would drop, and NameWinner had closed the door, somehow I was not allowed to bid on it. And, you didn't answer my question.

You may want to first check with at least a few major snap services and see if there already are back-orders. If there are more than 1 order, your best bet is to go for a competing snapper instead of just trying with your own hands. Moreover, exact drop time may vary and for at least a couple of time not until almost 3 p.m.; but for most of the time, if you can't get it by 2:30 p.m., wait for a few hours and go check with the big guys (those registrars with larger market shares). Each registrar has its time-table not only in updating own whois but also when it submits updates to the registry.

Thanks Nameslave, got it. Is there any way to tell which one have grabbed the dropped name(s) before the WHOIS is updated?

Alia,

With NW, you add name to your WATCH list, if NW got it, it says PENDING

If YOU have a snap on it, login to your account and the snap that was there should b gone.

Otherwise (I havent been using hte others as long so I dont know thier ins and outs yet) you should check @ all 17 registrars that snapanems uses (listed @ snapnames.com)

And all 10 that BD uses

And all that Ult uses

And ar.com (do htey have a whois) (Private)

And SafeNames.net (TFN)

And NameScout (pool)

Among others...

As far as I know there is quite a few registrars that rentout or use thier connections to grab names ..

umm, not telling, but they are good names, believe me..... at least worth 5x more than my NW bid...to an end user, maybe $500+

and the name with the snap could fetch $1000 quite easily....

an $8.75 is just like a reg, and I would reg all these names for sure.... so there you go!

I am just wondering if I'm missing something –why is that so special when the name 'has a snap'? Aren't those big players always competing with each other over the good drops?

My point was, FastAutos got his first names from NW.

True, but I've found there are also some good ones without any bid (or with somebody watching and waiting to bid only at the last minute).

I am new in this field, I guess it's all about the expired list, there are just too many names dropping every day, and it's impossible to go over all of them.
