I've never seen this before. The domain name is not available for registration. When you check the Whois it says "No match for domain in the registrar database" so you can't see who it is registered to.
It happens with some registrars.
Check with the registry to identify the registrar: http://www.verisigninc.com/en_US/products-and-services/domain-name-services/whois/index.xhtml
Then try doing the whois search directly on the website of that registrar, if you haven't already. Perhaps you'll yield more results.
It could be a drop that was caught and is pending auction or reallocation to a customer. Then the whois could update later.
Is it possible it was recently registered? Could be a propagation lag/delay for whois databases. Did you run the whois at the registrar where the name is registered?
