In reference to my previous post about Stargate and the Redemption period fiasco ( http://dnforum.com/showthread.php?p=406648#post406648 ),

I thought it might be useful to list other registrars who move domain names into redemption period just one or two days after the expiration date.

You know, the registrars who are basically screwing their customers by not giving them a week or two to pay the renewal fee. They would rather extort $120-$150 from their customers to restore the domain name out of redemption.

Registrars:

1) Stargate - redemption one day past expiration date - $120 to restore domain name

2) DomainDiscount24.com (Key Systems Gmbh) - redemption one day past expiration - $125 Euros to restore

Feel free to add to this list.

You mean they are skiping the 35-40 day "registrar hold" period?

Correct. Although most registrars utilize it, the 'registrar-hold' period is not a required part of RGP. Stargate and DomainDiscount24 are registrars that take domains directly from active status to redemption. And just one day past the expiration date. Sheesh!

Putting the name into redemption immediately following expiration is pretty harsh. However, one could renew the domain before it actually expires. I'm not sure why people wait until after the domain expires to renew it. You're kind of rolling the dice.

You're right Owen it is asking for trouble if you wait until after the expiration date. Unfortunately I have run into problems with the registrars listed above which ended up causing me to go past the expiration date on a couple of domain names. So this is warning to everyone to not let your domains go past expiration, especially with the registrars listed above!

recommend directnic.com - approximately 50 domains there; have used them for years with no problems; about 40 days on registrar hold-- $15 year-instant registrations, no fee for transfers, dns mgt. or forwarding--very fast customer responses to inquiries.

The truth is VERY FEW registrars would do that (do not offer a reasonably long grace period), and Stargate has been a well-known exception for quite a while. The reason is that it will be working AGAINST registrar's own interest NOT to provide some buffer between expiry and RGP, as they have little to lose (registrars have 45 days to ask for a refund), and the relatively "high" recovery fee (very often $100+) would definitely alienates registrants. So following the mainstream business practice, most registrars would render some 30 days registrar-level grace period for late/non-payment.
